Gene was born Nov. 13,1947, to John and Alice (Hillen) Sullivan at St. Vincent’s Hospital, Sioux City, Iowa. Gene Sullivan, a beloved husband, father, brother and friend, died June 18, 2025, peacefully, surrounded by family on his farm he had such pride in building throughout his life.
Gene’s life was marked by adventure and excitement from fond memories of growing up in Northeast Nebraska in a family full of boys (John Jr., Rich, Gene, Ronnie), giving his mother a true run for her money. The speed of life did not stop there, graduating from St. Frances Catholic School in Randolph on May 20th to joining the Army leaving for Fort Leonard Wood Missouri for Basic Training by June 5,1967.
The biggest, and best decision he ever made was his marriage to Jo (Joanne Krohn), Osmond, Feb. 12,1972, at St. Frances de Chantal Catholic Church, Randolph. Gene and Jo had seven children, 15 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and counting, in their 53 years of absolute bliss, Mark and his wife, Robin, Brainard; Stacy, Norfolk; Nick, Belden; Shawn and his wife, Kate, Omaha; Casey and his wife, Kristy, Tampa, Fla.; Britni and her husband, Matt, Salt Lake City, Utah; and Brandi and her partner, Haley, Omaha.
Gene was deeply involved in farming and took great pride in his work, which included raising hogs and starting Sullivan Crop Insurance Services, a successful crop insurance agency in the tri-state area. His dedication to helping farmers succeed was a testament to his selfless service and commitment to the community.
His ideation was one that could have rivaled Steve Jobs. He loved to read, and even in his final days continued to say “If something doesn’t sound right, read the government documents about it yourself. Ask questions, and fight for how it should be.” He had a constant drive and could envision everything from a new remodeling project to a heck of a party with all of the details mapped out. Gene’s life was filled with many cherished memories, from his love of surprise parties for Jo, to family trips to Disneyland and road trips throughout all of the U.S. “Get in the truck, let’s go see the world.”
He was known for his humor, often sharing jokes about his brothers, his military service, meeting Jo, his wedding day, and the adventures of raising such a large family. His children will continue to echo his many, many signature sayings they have heard throughout their lives as a testament to his wits.
Gene’s legacy is one of love, laughter, and resilience. He faced life’s challenges with determination, never-ever-giving up, even in the most difficult times. His family fondly remembers his ability to bring joy and his unwavering support for those he loved. Gene will be dearly missed by his wife, Jo, their children, his brother Rich, and all who knew him. His spirit will live on in the hearts of his family and friends. Nebraska land, born on it, toiled from it, and now gets to rest in it.
Gene is preceded in death by his parents, John and Alice Sullivan; his brothers, John Jr., Randolph, and Ronnie, Norfolk and his parents-in-law, Ray and Dorothy Krohn, Osmond.
