Arlyce Jean was born April 23, 1943, in Maskell, to Amos and Margaret (Draise) Gran. She graduated from Obert-Maskell High School in 1961. Arlyce married Charles Edward Newton June 10, 1961, at the Zion Lutheran Church, Maskell. At that time, they were members of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Obert, and after the merger of the Obert and Maskell churches, she continued her church membership in the newly formed Faith Lutheran Church of Maskell. In 1972, she and Charles purchased the main farm “Home Place” east of Hartington. Upon them both retiring from the farm in 2012, they moved to Vermillion, S.D., and became members of Trinity Lutheran Church in Vermillion. In 2022, Arlyce moved back to Hartington and resided in an apartment at Hartland Flats. In 2024, Arlyce became a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Hartington. She had been a resident at Arbor Care since Jan. 26, 2024.

Throughout her life, Arlyce was a member of the “692” Club and the Ladies Aide of Faith Lutheran Church. She made pies for the Country Line Café in Obert. Arlyce loved making things with her hands, including painting, pottery, knitting, sewing and quilting, of which quilting was her passion. She was definitely a typical farm wife, cooking, cleaning, baking, sewing, canning and gardening.

She is survived by her two sons, Rich (Karen) Newton, Hartington, and Rodney (Janet) Newton, Laurel; grandchildren, Mikaela (Tom) Wolfe of Grand Island (and their children Addison, Ella, Lydia, Ethan, Evan), Aaron (Sofi) Newton, Hartington, and their children, Rowan Lennyn, and Haelyn; Erica (Alex) Langseth, Hartington, and their children Ryker and Charlee; Johnathon (Laura) Newton, Magnet, and their children Neveah and Soma; Julia Newton, Laurel, and her daughter, Jurnee.
