Interment will be at the St. Frances Catholic Cemetery, rural Randolph.
The Christian Mothers will have a rosary at 4 p.m., and public visitation will be 5-7 p.m., May 23, at the church with a Vigil Service beginning at 7 p.m.
Mary Lou died May 13, 2025 at the MercyOne Siouxland Medical Center, Sioux City, Iowa.
Stonacek Funeral Chapel in Randolph is in charge of the arrangements.
Mary Lou was born Dec. 16, 1950, in Yankton, S.D., to Paul A. and Mary Ann (Eskens) Schurman Jr. She attended grade school until second grade at Holy Trinity Catholic School, Hartington, receiving her First Communion at Holy Trinity Church. She completed her formal education at St. Frances Catholic School, Randolph. Mary Lou was a proud member of the class of 1969 from St. Frances Catholic High School, Randolph. Mary Lou married Rick Coenen Jan. 10, 1970, at the St. Jane Frances de Chantal Catholic Church, Randolph. After they were married, they lived in the Randolph area and had three children. They later divorced. Mary Lou owned and operated her own state licensed daycare for 27 years. She also worked at Jerry’s Hilltop and the Colonial Manor Nursing Home, Randolph.
She enjoyed cake decorating, sewing and quilting, gardening and reading. She also loved spending time with her family and friends. Mary Lou was a member of the St. Jane Frances de Chantal Catholic Church, Randolph, Christian Mothers, St. Jane Frances PCCW (Parish Council of Catholic Women), and the Wareham Club.
Survivors include her children, Melissa (Tom) Grubb, Kingsley, Iowa; Michelle Coenen, Sergeant Bluff, Iowa; Mark (Holly) Coenen, Allen; grandchildren, Aaron Grubb; Kayla (Nick) Miller, and their children, Sawyer and Sage; Kari (Keith) Rohde, and their children, Paisllie, Parker, Porter, and a new arrival due in the fall; Matthew (Mallory) Erwin, and their children, Marshall, Major, Manheim and Makinli; Mary Lou’s siblings, Kary (Dave) Lurz, Verdigre; Barb (Doug) Korth, Randolph; Steve Schurman, Randolph; Roger (Linda) Schurman, Firth; Randy (Lisa) Schurman, Coleridge; Chuck (Karen) Schurman, Wynot; numerous nieces, nephews; greatnieces and great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Paul and Mary Ann Schurman. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family for a later designation.
