Devils rally to earn seven-point win over Ponca Indians

PONCA - The Wynot Blue Devils trailed at halftime, but rallied in the second half to down the Ponca Indians 47-40 Thursday night.

The Blue Devils got a balanced attack putting three players in double figures led by Charlie Schroeder’s double-double of 16 points and 12 rebounds.

Anthony Haberman contributed 12 points and Garrett Lange would finish with 11 points and seven rebounds for the game.

Ponca’s Bryan Bennett took scoring honors for the game with 17 points and also had a double-double with 11 boards, while Taylor Korth worked the offensive glass for 13 points and eight rebounds for the Indians.

In the opening quarter Wynot got four points each from Garrett Lange and Anthony Haberman.

Ponca countered with five points from Taylor Korth and a pair of baskets by Bryan Bennett as the score was tied at 10-10 after one period.

In the second quarter Anthony Haberman drove the basket for four points and Garrett Lange got a basket in close plus one.

The Indians’ Bryan Bennett dumped in seven more points as Ponca held a 22-19 halftime advantage.

Wynot’s defense ramped up the pressure in the third quarter. Dalton Lamprecht hit a trey but other scoring was hard to find for the Indians.

Wynot went on an 11-4 run led by a 3-pointer by Charlie Schroeder and a couple of put-backs by Garrett Lange, along with a mid-range jumper by Peyton Wieseler as they built a 30-26 lead.

Ponca mounted a comeback early in the fourth quarter with four points from Bryan Bennett and 3-pointers by Dalton Lamprecht and Zach Fernau.

Wynot held them off thanks to a ninepoint scoring burst from Schroeder and a long trey from the left corner by Colin Wieseler as the Blue Devils earned the hardfought 47-40 win.
