Wynot tops Homer to notch another win

Posted in:

Wynot — After a lackluster first half by the Blue Devils against the Homer Knights football team on Friday night Wynot would get their offense rolling in the third quarter and they went on to pick up a homecoming win and improve their season record to 2-1. Wynot would use a big 26-0 third quarter run and solid defense in the second half to roll to the 34-20 win.

“This was not our best complete game effort but the kids found a way to win,” said Coach Steve Heimes.

Wynot’s offense was led by Owen Sudbeck who had a 31-yard touchdown and also added a touchdown catch. Anthony Haberman scored on a touchdown run of 38 yards and threw for two scores.

Homer was led by Avery Overfelt who rushed for 114 yards and also caught a touchdown from Austin Baker for the Knights touchdown.

Zack Foxhoven led his team with 10 tackles and would record a defensive score for the Blue Devils as well. Anthony Haberman and Zack Foxhoven both had fumble recoveries for the Blue Devils defense.

The defense for Homer was paced by Avery Overfelt with 12 tackles and Carson Gaarder with eight stops for the Knights.

Neither team could sustain drives on the offense side of the ball in the first quarter as the game remained scoreless in the period.

In the second quarter the Knights got their offense going. Homer got on the board first as Avery Overfelt broke up the left side on a 35 yard run. Carson Gaarden would bull in from the 5 yard line for the first score of the game. Angel Paredes added the PAT kick to give Homer the 7-0 lead.

Wynot was able to move the ball into the Knights red zone but had a bad pitch on a option play that Homer recovered to stall the drive.

The Knight would mount another drive and at the 2:50 mark of the second quarter Austin Baker connected with Landon Gilster on a 30 yard touchdown pass. Angel Paredes would add the PAT kick and the Knight had increased their lead to 14-0.

As the clock wound down in the half Wynot would find some offense. A 22 yard catch and run by Trystan Heimes and a 11 yard first down run by Anthony Haberman would set up a Blue Devil score just before the half.

Haberman would find Owen Sudbeck over the middle for the 14 yard touchdown completion. Haberman dove in over the left side of the line for the PAT as the half ended with Homer leading 14-8.

The tide of the game would turn early in the third quarter for the Blue Devils. In a span of less than two minutes Wynot would put a pair of touchdowns on the board. The first one came from the defense. As the interior line stood up the Homer running back, Wynot linebacker Zack

Foxhoven would strip the ball and race 15 yards to paydirt.

Owen Sudbeck ran over the right side for the PAT giving Wynot the 16-14 lead.

A quick three and out by the Knights put the Blue Devils back on offense.

On the first down play Owen Sudbeck broke free on a 31-yard TD scamper. The PAT pass failed, but Wynot had gained some breathing room early in the second half leading 22-14.

Wynot’s defense started to take control of the game as well. After another stop by their defense, Wynot would take over at mid field. Two plays later Anthony Haberman would keep the ball on an option play around the left side and race 38 yards for the score. The PAT run was no good but Wynot had built their lead to 28-14.

Wynot added their final score late in the third frame after an interception by Anthony Haberman, which was aided by a 28-yard catch and run by Trystan Heimes and a pass interference call on the next series to allow the Blue Devils to move deep into Knight territory.

Wynot capped the drive when Haberman found Colin Wieseler on a 14-yard crossing pattern for the touchdown. The PAT pass was off the mark but the Devils held a comfortable 34-14 lead.

Defense controlled play in the final quarter. Reserves would mop up in the final minutes. Homer got a 12 yard touchdown run by Avery Overfeld in the final minute of the game to make the final 34- 20 in favor of the Blue Devils.

Wynot travels to Randolph to take on the Cardinals next Friday.
