WYNOT — It took an extra period but the Wynot Blue Devils upset the Osmond Tigers, 42-40, Friday.

The Blue Devils who trailed 20-6 at halftime, would rally in the second half scoring in the final seconds to send the game into overtime. In the overtime period, the Tigers would score but failed on the extra point. The Blue Devils also scored and then converted on the PAT to earn the exciting win.

Osmond was led by Alex Vinson who rushed for 107 yards and scored four rushing touchdowns and had a interception return for another score for the Tigers.

Peyton Wieseler would pace the Blue Devils connecting on 23-46 passing attempts for six touchdowns. Anthony Haberman and Trystan Heimes both had three touchdown catches in the game.

On defense, Alex Vinson also lead the Tigers with 14 tackles two interceptions and a fumble recovery.

Wynot defense was anchored by Anthony Haberman with 14 tackles, Peyton Wieseler and Garrett Lange were close behind with 12 and 10 stops, respectively.

The two teams would exchange punts to start the game. At the four-minute mark, the Tigers would mount a long 65-yard drive in just five plays. Connor Gutz would contribute rushes of 25 and 10 yard to fuel the drive. Josh Gansebom dove in from the 3-yard line for the first score of the game.

Gansebom also added the PAT run to give Osmond an 8-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

A blocked punt by the Tigers defense gave them the ball deep in Blue Devils’ territory to set up the next Osmond score. Bryan Solorzano swept to the right side for the 2-yard touchdown. The PAT run was stopped and Osmond increased their lead to 14-0.

Wynot would have their next two drives fizzle out. One on an intentional grounding call and the next one on an interception by Osmond’s Alex Vinton.

Osmond put together another long drive, all on the ground. First down runs by Zach Gansebom, Bryan Solarzano and Connor Gutz aided the drive. Alex Vinson powered up the middle for the final 10-yard touchdown. The PAT run was stuffed and the Tiger lead had grown to 20-0.

Osmond would try an onside kick but Tristan Heimes covered it at the Wynot 35-yard line. Paden Wieseler would take over at quarterback and he ran the two-minute drill to perfection.  A first down catch by Anthony Haberman and a 6-yarder by Jack Kuchta moved the ball into the red zone. Paden Wieseler would hook up with Anthony Haberman on a 15-yard slant and in for the touchdown. The PAT pass failed but Wynot was on the scoreboard, still trailing 20-6 at halftime.

The third quarter did not start well for the Blue Devils. On the very first play Alex Vinson stepped in front of a Paden Wieseler pass and returned it 30 yards for a pick six. Connor Gutz ran in the PAT and the Tigers lead ballooned to 28-6 with less than a minute off the clock in the third period.

The Blue Devils offense would shake off the misfortune and score on their next two possessions. The first score was set up by a couple of Wieseler to Haberman completions. Haberman’s second catch was a 30-yard catch and run to paydirt. Wieseler then hit Trystan Heimes for the PAT and Wynot had closed the gap 28-14. The second score featured a 25-yard catch and run by Trystan Heimes. Paden Wieseler continued dealing the hot hand as he found Trystan Heimes in the right corner of the endzone for an 11-yard touchdown pass. The PAT failed and Wynot continued to close the gap trailing 28-20.

Osmond would answer with another rushing touchdown of their own. Hard running by Connor Gutz and Alex Vinson got a pair of first downs. Patrick Vinson would set up the score as he swept the left side for a 25-yard gain and Alex Vinson dove in from the 2-yard line for the touchdown. The PAT was no good as Osmond gained a little breathing room building the lead back up to 34-20 going into the final quarter of play.

Wynot’s aerial attack would continue in the fourth quarter. Paden Wieseler and Anthony Haberman would connect on a 25-yarder and a 34-yard catch and run. The two would cap the drive on a 3-yard fade to the left pylon for the touchdown. The PAT pass failed and the score stood at 34-26.

Wynot defense would pin the Osmond offense deep and a bad snap on fourth down went out of the endzone for a safety making the score 34-28.

Wynot defense would get the ball back in the waning minutes, when Hunter Heimes stripped the Osmond quarterback and recovered it at the 35-yard line.

A 16-yard completion to Haberman moved the ball into  scoring position as the clock wound down. On a fourth down play, Paden Wieseler found Trystan Heimes up the left seam for an 18-yard tying touchdown with just 11 seconds left in regulation. The PAT failed and the game was sent to overtime, tied at 34-34.

It took Osmond only one play to score in the overtime on a 10-yard blast up the middle by Alex Vinson.

Now, it was Wynot’s turn on offense. Wieseler ran a draw for two yards and then hooked up with Trystan Heimes for the 8-yard touchdown toss. Wieseler then found Heimes open again for the PAT and Wynot had completed the comeback to earn the 42-40 win.

Wynot is idle this week, but hosts Wausa for Homecoming the following week.
