Wynot surprises state-rated Bloomfield

Posted in:

WYNOT — The Wynot Blue Devils used a big play offense and a stingy defense to upset the Bloomfield Bees here Friday.

Bloomfield came into the contest ranked third in the statewide polls, but the Blue Devils didn’t let that bother them as they controlled the tempo, holding the Bees scoreless until the final seconds of the game.

Wynot’s record improved to 1-1 with the big win.

“I thought the kids played physical for all four quarters, Wynot Coach Steve Heimes said.

Owen Sudbeck led the Blue Devils’ offense as he rushed for 112 yards on 16 carries and scored on touchdown runs of 27, 22 and five yards. Anthony Haberman contributed to the win rushing for 139 yards, scoring on a 65-yard run and connected with Colin Wieseler on a 18-yard touchdown pass.

Bloomfield was paced by Cody Bruegman’s 85 yards on 23 carries.

On defense, Wynot was led by Peyton Wieseler with 18 tackles. Garrett Lange had 12 tackles and Owen Sudbeck and Anthony Haberman each recorded 10.

The Bee defense was led by Logan Doerr with 11 tackles. Cole Miller and Gabe Lauck had six and five tackles respectively. Wylie and Ziegles and Gabe Lauck had interceptions for the Bees.

Defense dominated at the start. At the 3:41 mark of the opening quarter, Wynot’s scatback Owen Sudbeck turned around the right side and broke free on a 27-yard TD run. The PAT pass was off the mark as the Blue Devils took the early 6-0 lead.

Bloomfield was on the move early in the second quarter but coughed up the ball at the 25 and Colin Wieseler pounced on it to end the threat. The Bees got the ball right back on a Wiley Ziegler interception but that drive failed on downs. In the final minutes of the half, Owen Sudbeck again swept the right side of the line for a 22-yard scoring jaunt. The PAT failed, but the Devils now held a 12-0 lead.

Bloomfield took the second half kick off and gained a couple of first downs. An Anthony Haberman sack on a fourth-and-one play stalled the drive.

On the Blue Devils’ first drive of the second half, they moved the ball quickly into the red zone. Owen Sudbeck picked up his third rushing TD of the night on a 5-yard trap play off the right side. On the PAT attempt Wynot fumbled the ball but James Collins recovered it in the endzone for the 2-point conversion and Wynot’s lead had grown to 20-0.

The Bees would get a drive going late in the third quarter, aided by a couple of first down runs by Cody Bruegman and a 23-yard catch and run by Wiley Ziegler, but the drive stalled when on a fourth down play Zach Foxhoven batted down a pass attempt and the Devils took over deep in Bee territory at the 5-yard line. Wynot quarterback Anthony Haberman kept the ball on an option left play and outran the Bee secondary for a 65-yard TD run. The PAT pass failed, but Wynot held a 26-0 lead.

Wynot added one more score in the final frame when Haberman connected with Colin Wieseler for a 23-yard pass play to set up the score. The drive appeared to stall when on a 4th and 18 play. Haberman would scramble and find his fullback Colin Wieseler all alone up the middle for an 18-yard scoring toss. The PAT run failed as Wynot’s lead ballooned to 32-0.

Bloomfield would get on the scoreboard on the final play of the game after a Blue Devil fumble which Wylie Ziegler recovered. Cody Bruegman then found Lyle Warrior open on a crossing pattern and connected on the 16-yard TD pass on the very last play of the game.

Wynot hosts Homer for Homecoming Friday with a 6 p.m. start.
