Wynot relies on defense to stop Homer

Posted in:

WAKEFIELD — The Homer Lady Knights put up a real fight in their matchup with the Wynot Lady Blue Devils Friday.

The Lady Blue Devils had to rely on their defense to earn this win as their offensive would struggle in the second half to fight off the Lady Knights comeback attempt.

Eventually Wynot would find their offense back late in the final quarter and advance to the championship game on Monday with the 41-32 win.

Homer would get nine points from Hannah Harris and Katie Baker finished with eight points in a balanced scoring attack. Wynot got 10 points each from Michaela Lange and Karley Heimes along with a trio of three pointers by Katelyn Heine.

In the first quarter the two teams traded buckets. Homer got five points by Hannah Harris, a trey by Katie Baker and a bucket in close from Shaelee Jensen. Wynot matched that with a pair of treys by Katelyn Heine and buckets by Karley Heimes and Shaelee Planer as the score was knotted at 10-10 at the end of one period.

In the second quarter the Lady Knights Hannah Elsea drained a 3-pointer and Hannah Harris and Katie Baker each hit a field goal. Wynot would go on a 13-7 run thanks in part to a three pointer each by Shalee Planer and Michaela Lange as the Lady Blue Devils held a 23-17 halftime lead.

The scoring went cold for both teams in the third quarter. The Lady Knights only got a pair of baskets from Bradie Johnson. Wynot’s lone field goal was a 3-pointer by Michaela Lange. Homer had cut Wynot’s lead to 27-24 going into the final period.

Scoring by both teams was at a premium early in the final quarter. Hannah Harris’s driving layup cut the Blue Devil lead to one point.

Katelyn Heine finally hit a trey to put Wynot back up by four points. Homer got it back to two points on a Shaelee Jensen lay-in but that was as close as they got.

Michaela Lange went 4-4 from the line and Karley Heimes went 2-2 and got an offensive rebound and putback to seal the 41-33 win.

Wynot advanced to play Ponca at Laurel in Monday’s championship game.
