Wynot relay teams bring home State gold
OMAHA — The Wynot High School track teams wrapped up the 2021 season with plenty to brag about after recording a seventh-place finish in the girls standings and the boys took 30th at the Class D state finals last week in Omaha.
Keying the finish among the sport’s, small school elite for the girls were the 4x100 (Kinslee Heimes, Kendra Pinkelman, Myrah Sudbeck, Krystal Sudbeck) and 4x400 (Kendra Pinkelman, Kinslee Heimes, Myrah Sudbeck, Karley Heimes) state championship runs that pulled in 20 of the squad’s 27 points.
“The 4x100 did a great job from start to finish,” Wynot head coach Lee Heimes said. “Kinslee got out of the blocks very quickly. The handoffs were smooth, and we ran the curves and straightaways very well. Krystal did a great job of finishing the race through the finish line.
Their effort was not only good enough for some state hardware, but it also set a new school record of 51.31.
Coach Heimes noted that Pinkeleman’s start also keyed the 4x400 win.
“Kinslee Heimes, Myrah and Karley extended the lead and ran very smooth throughout the race,” Coach Heimes said. “Karley did a great job of finishing the race strong.
The girls were thrilled with how they finished.
“Both relay teams were very excited about winning first place,” Heimes said. “They worked hard to get there and used their athletic talent to accomplish a great feat.”
Charlie Schroeder brought home a silver medal in the 400-meter run, finishing with a 52.01 after a finals-qualifying 51.95 sprint.
“He was very strong in getting out of the blocks and ran very well for his best time of the season,” Lee Heimes said. “He got out of the blocks very strong, and he ran a smooth race. The finish he had was very close to the third-place runner, and what a close finish it was. Charlie did a great job of competing and running his race.”
Heimes said his team matured and improved a great deal this season.
“I thought all the student/athletes did a great job of competing this year. We learned a lot about what they can do well. They steadily improved throughout the year. We had 15 competitors make it to state, they all did a great job of competing. They all tried to do their best and that is all a coach can ask for. We had a great season as a whole.”
The Blue Devils set four school records and tied another and Coach Heimes emphasized the team’s ability to work hard on the field and in the classroom,
“They want to be successful in whatever they do,” he said. “We have some great young adults learning to be successful in life through sports. We are looking to build on things that we accomplished this year, and we will miss our seniors.”
