Wynot picks up two more SCL wins

Posted in:

WYNOT — With district playoff play only a bit more than a week away, the Wynot Expos and Crofton Bluejays are making a final push for better seeding.

The Expos won two straight earlier in the week before falling at home against Crofton to wrap a 2-1 week and move to 7-9 overall and into sixth place in the South Central League standings.

“Our starting pitching is going deeper into games,” Wynot player/coach Lee Heimes said. “Defensively we need to be more consistent. We need to start games better in all phases of the game. When we get the lead, we are tough to beat.”

In the 14-4 win over Irene, Dain Whitmire pitched seven innings and allowed two runs while Scott Morrison was 3-3 with three RBI and a homer.

Wynot followed that win up with a 12-5 beating of Lesterville as Jackson Sudbeck earned the win from the bump while Dawson Sudbeck went 3-for-4 with two doubles and Jalen Wieseler and Jackson Sudbeck both went 3-for-5 with three and two RBI respectively.

Crofton beat Wynot, 11-4 as the Bluejays went 3-0 to move to 9-6 and move to fourth place in district standings.

“We have now won six of the last seven and are in a fight to the end for the two seed in district playoffs,” Crofton player/coach Ben Hegge said. “We knew after our slow start that we had a big home stand to finish, and we have been playing some really good ball these past couple weeks. It is a big last week of the regular season before we get into what really counts: postseason baseball.”

Crofton also beat Irene 15-4 and Freeman 6-4, with both games on its home field before heading to Wynot for the final win of the week.

“The entire team is really playing well,” Hegge said. “Pitchers, hitters, defense. Things are just starting to click.”

In the win against Wynot, Jared Wiebelhaus had a 4-hit game with a homer and a double.

Tyler Zimmerman had multi-hit games every night for the Bluejays and Nick Hegge went 4-for-6 and threw three innings of relief in the Wynot win.

Crofton will wrap the season with a final homestand that included Sunday night’s tile with Lesterville while they hosted Yankton’s Lakers Tuesday and welcome the Yankton Tappers on Thursday for their regular season finale.
