Wynot girls win the rubber match against Lady Cats

HARTINGTON — With a 43-35 win, Wynot edged out Hartington- Newcastle in a 2-1 season series that included games in the Hartington Classic Invite championships and the Lewis & Clark Conference semifinals.

The Lady Blue Devils’ eight-point victory came days after the semifinal victory over the Lady Wildcats, as Wynot handed HNS two losses in the span of six days.

Wynot was led by junior Katelyn Heine scoring a game-high 26 points. She could not be stopped early on, scoring seven of the team’s first-quarter points and eight of the team’s 11 second-quarter points.
Shaelee Planer scored the other two points in the first quarter and Michaela Lange drained a 3-pointer late in the second quarter.

By halftime, Wynot led HNS 20-15 and Heine was one of three scorers for her team with 15 total points.

Her ability to drive the basket, earn a foul, and get to the free throw line was a difference maker early on. Heine made three eld goals for eight points in the first half while going 7-8 from the line.

“It is just a mindset that I have to take it to the hoop and it is my teammates getting it to me too, which helps,” said Heine.

Wynot’s head coach Steve Wieseler said the junior was coming off a game against Pender the night before where Heine helped secure the win.

“The biggest thing is the girls look- ing for each other, moving without the ball, and driving,” said Wieseler. “She doesn’t get open if someone doesn’t create. With the 26 points, there were a lot of assists there, but she had a big game last night too. She had a big fourth quarter where she scored 14 in the fourth to pull away from Pender.”

Hartington-Newcastle pushed back in the third quarter, scoring 13 points to Wynot’s eight to tie things up at 28- 28 entering the fourth quarter.

HNS senior guard Willa Scoville scored 11 of her team's points, and she converted two free throws at the end of the quarter to tie up the game.

Scoville had a team-high 20 points for the Lady Cats on the night.

In the fourth quarter, the HNS shooting went dormant again. The team made just two eld goals and went 3-4 at the charity stripe for seven points.

“We had a couple of threes that I thought were good shots, we had a couple of opportunities to drive the hoop with Belle [Harms] that were good shots but the ball wouldn’t go in the hole,” said HNS head coach Corey Uldrich. “In crunch time, we are going to have to make those shots if we want to advance in the postseason here.”

Meanwhile, the Wynot offense kept driving to the bucket and the team would go 7-11 at the line while Heine also made back-to-back threes along with a layup.

The 15 point quarter for the Lady Devils sealed the 43-35 victory.

It was the second win in as many days for a Wynot team that played four times last week, going 2-2.

“After our first two losses [on Mon- day and Tuesday], we kind of changed our mindset and knew we had to get the next two wins,” said Heine. “So, we just pushed ourselves through it.”

The win for Wynot sent the girls into SubDistricts with the top seed and a record of 15-6. The Lady Devils played at Cedar Catholic Tuesday against Santee.

The winner of the Wynot game plays in the finals on Thursday against the winner of three seed Bloom eld and two seed Emerson-Hubbard.

For HNS, the girls started Subdistricts in Creighton on Tuesday. The Lady Cats are the two seed and faced Boyd County. The top seed North Central played the winner of Monday’s game between four seed Niobrara/ Verdigre and ve seed Wausa.
