Wynot girls split pair against Cl foes

PIERCE — The Wynot Lady Blue Devils split a pair of basketball games this past week. On Thursday night the Lady Blue Devils moved up a couple of classes to take on the Pierce Bluejays and lost a 31-27 defensive battle.

Wynot rebounded Friday night when they downed the Winnebago Lady Indians by a 57-40 margin.

On Thursday in a very tight defensive battle the Lady Bluejays used a 10-4 second quarter burst to take a slim lead and made it stand up in the second half to take the win. This game was decided at the freethrow line as the Lady Jays held an 11-1 advantage from the charity stripe to help determine the outcome of the game.

Karley Heimes led the Blue Devils with nine points and Emersyn Sudbeck and Edyn Sudbeck chipped in with six and five points, respectively.

Pierce was led by Kenzie Moeller with 11 points and helped by Gina Wragge with an eight-point effort.

In the first quarter the two teams traded scores. Wynot got a 3-pointer by Autumn Lawson and a bucket each from Kendra Pinkelman and Karley Heimes. Pierce got a 3-pointer from Alexas Sindelar and five freethrows as the score was tied 11-11 after one period.

In the second quarter Gina Wragge dumped in six points to lead a 10-4 run by the Lady Jays. Wynot only got a basket each from Kendra Pinkelamn and Karley Heimes as they fell behind 21-15 at halftime.

In the third period defenses dominated. Wynot’s Edyn Sudbeck and Pierce’s Kenzie Moeller traded 3-pointers as the Lady Blue Jays maintained a 26-19 lead going into the final frame.

Wynot tried to rally with 3-pointers by Emersyn Sudbeck and Karley Heimes in the final frame. Pierce held them off, however, with a bucket by Abby Meier and a 3-4 freethrows effort by Kenzie Moeller as the Bluejays earned the 31-27 win.

WINNEBAGO — On Friday night the Lady Blue Devils ventured onto the reservation to battle the Winnebago Lady Indians. Wynot would break open a very competitive contest in the 4th quarter as they went on a 20-7 run to pull away for the 57-40 win.

It was raining threes in this game as the two teams combined for 13 made baskets from behind the arc.

Karley Heimes had another big night for Wynot, hitting four treys on her way to a game-high 20 points and finished with a double double of 10 rebounds. Edyn Sudbeck drained a trio of 3-pointers for 12 points and Autumn Lawson also notched double figures with 10 points.

For Winnebago they were led by Madeline Cleveland and Keisha Snyder who finished with 15 and 13 points respectively. Natasha Deal led the Indians with 11 rebounds.

In the opening frame Winnebago got a pair of 3-pointers by Madeline Cleveland and abasket plus one by Sylvia Valentino. Wynot countered with a 10-point eruption by Karley Heimes, along with a trey by Edyn Sudbeck as they clung to a slim 14-13 early advantage.

Karley Heimes continued to find scoring opportunities both inside and out adding eight more points to her totals in the second quarter for the Lady Devils. The Lady Indians stayed close thanks to two more three pointers by Madeline Cleveland as the game stayed tight with Wynot up 24-22 at halftime.

In the third quarter Winnebago got seven points from Keisha Snyder and another bucket by Cleveland. Wynot got some help from Autumn Lawson with five points and a second trey by Edyn Sudbeck as they took a 37-33 margin into the fourth quarter.

Wynot would open the final period on a 12-0 burst to give the Blue Devils some breathing room. Three pointers byAutumn Lawson, Edyn Sudbeck and Karley Heimes lead the charge. Winnebago got a trey by Sinya Harlan and conventional three points from Keisha Snyder but it was not enough to keep up as Wynot pulled away for the 57-40 win.
