Wynot girls retain D2 State title

Posted in:

LINCOLN — The Wynot Lady Blue Devils once again swept through State Tournament compettion last week to become the D2 Nebraska state champions for the second year in a row.

The Lady Blue Devils had to earn this one, as they had to defeat the second-rated team in the Falls City Sacred Heart Irish in the semifinals before dispatching the Humphrey St. Francis Lady Flyers in the championship game, 59-51.

The title game win avenged a Holiday tournament loss to the Flyers.

The Lady Blue Devils had to find a way to control the Lady Flyers’ All State guard Allison Weidner to earn this win.

They had some success by getting her in foul trouble in the second quarter and then limiting her to just a single bucket in the fourth quarter. Wynot rotated Noelle Wieseler and Autumn Lawson on the prolific scorer and then doubled or tripled her when she would drive to the hoop. Weidner would finish with a game-high 24 points to lead her team.

Caitlin Jalosz had a good final quarter and helped out with her seven points.

Wynot had balanced scoring in the contest. Shaelee Planer hit her freethrows and drove to the basket for 14 points to lead the Lady Blue Devils.

Karley Heimes had a big second half and contributed 13 points to the win. Katelyn Heine also hit double figures with 10 points and Autumn Lawson just missed, with a nine-point effort off the bench.

In the opening quarter, Allison Weidner hit for nine quick points to give the Lady Flyers an early advantage. Wynot would counter with four points from Autumn Lawson and 3-pointers by Katelyn Heine and Edyn Sudbeck to take a 17-14 lead at the end of one.

The second quarter went back and forth. Wynot got six big points in close by Shaelee Planer and a 3-pointer from Emersyn Sudbeck.

Humphrey St. Francis got three points from Kyleigh Sjuts and a trey by Alissa Kosch. Allison Weidner sat out in foul trouble, but came in to score a bucket plus one to tie the game at 26-26 at halftime.

Weidner went to work again in the third quarter for the Lady Flyers dumping in nine more points.

Wynot stayed right with their opponents as they got seven points from Karley Heimes and buckets by Shaelee Planer and Katelyn Heine and clung to a 39-36 lead going into the final period of play.

The Lady Flyers would mount a rally early in the final quarter on a 3-pointer each by Kyleigh Sjuts and Lauren Pfiefer and sixpoints from Caitlin Jalosz.

Shaelee Planer and Katelyn Heine each connected for five points each for the Lady Devils.

A Kaylee Stricklin freethrow tied the game at 46-46 with 3:25 left, but Coach Steve Wiseler’s team did not panic after that.

Autumn Lawson responded by calmly pulling up on a fast break to drain a 3-pointer. Wynot then hit 11-17 fourth quarter freethrows to earn the 59-51 win.
