Wynot girls punch ticket to State

ORD — The Wynot Lady Blue Devils used full-court, man-to-man pressure to come away with the 45-32 District title win Friday against the South Platte Lady Knights.

The win puts the Wynot girls in the state tourney for the ninth time in the last 10 years.

The Lady Blue Devils’ depth played a big role in this one, as they got quality minutes from the bench to hold off the Lady Knights when some of their starters got into foul trouble in the first half.

Autumn Lawson, Edyn Sudbeck, Emersyn Sudbeck, and Karley Heimes all contributed solid minutes to help Wynot pick up the win.

Wynot’s season leader, Katelyn Heine, took scoring honors for the game with her 13 points, despite limited playing time in the second half.

Kaitlyn Heimes and Michaela Lange helped the balanced attack with nine and seven points respectively.

South Platte got 11 points from Autumn Dickmander, seven points by Mariah Koenen and four points each from Taryn McMillen and Jordyn Koenen.

Mariah Koenen and Autumn Dickmander connected for four and three points in what was a tight first quarter.

Late treys by Katelyn Heine and Michaela Lange gave Wynot the 14-11 early lead.

In the second quarter, Autumn Dick- mander hit a pair of layups and Mariah Koenen dumped in a trio of free throws for the Lady Knights.

Wynot countered with a second three-pointer by Katelyn Heine and a deep three from the right corner by Kaitlyn Heimes to push their advantage to 28-21 at halftime.

Physical play by both teams slowed scoring in the third quarter.

South Platte got a conventional three points from Breana Triplette and baskets by Autumn Dickmander and Taya McMillen. Wynot got eld goals by Katelyn Heine, Kaitlyn Heimes, and Michaela Lange and kept the lead intact at 36-28 going into the final quarter.

In the fourth quarter, early play saw eld goals by Autumn Dickmander and Taya McMillen that cut into Wynot’s lead but the Lady Blue Devils got four more points from Katelyn Heine and baskets on back door cuts by Kaitlyn Heimes and Michaela Lange to keep the lead.

In the final minutes, Wynot took the air out of the ball and went to a spread offense to pull away for the 45-32 win.
