Wynot girls post 4-1 week

Posted in:

WYNOT - A contentious five-set match ended in Wynot’s favor on Monday night over Randolph. The Blue Devils won the fourth and fifth set to come back and earn the win over the Cardinals

Wynot won 25-14 14-25 23-25 26-24 15-11 on Monday night.

Each team went on a run in the first two sets, and the teams split them 1-1. From the third set on though it became really contentious as the energy heightened.

Randolph would win a close third set and would fight back in the fourth set to try and seal a victory.

Down 20-24, Randolph senior Sophia Harder went on a streak at the service line through two timeouts and a thunderous Wynot audience cheering along the way.

“She is a senior and she has been playing for a few years,” said Randolph coach Rob Engel. “So that is the type of step up moment you want to see out of your kids and everyone rose to the occasion. We love to see that.”

Randolph would tie the match up at 24-24, but Wynot fought to win the next two points to take the fourth set and force a decisive fifth set.

“That fight came probably more from us challenging them as a unit to play more as one solid team instead of six individuals,” said Wynot head coach Tammy Wieseler. “When you put it in perspective and start playing for your teammates instead of focusing on your own mistakes it is a lot easier to push through that stuff.”

The Blue Devils would win the final set 15-11 to take the victory. Wieseler went on to say after the game that matches that take five sets and are challenging like against rival Randolph will help strengthen the team.

“I think with us playing a lot of these tougher teams and playing long matches with them, it will really help us continue to play strong through October.”

The win for Wynot puts the team at 7-2 on the season, while Randolph falls to 7-12. Both teams now head into October to finish out the regular season before potentially meeting back up in the conference tournament from October 20-23.

While it was a team effort on defense, Edyn Sudbeck shined as a hitter on offense. Leading her team with 17 kills, she was the only player to eclipse more than nine on the night. She also contributed 15
