Wynot girls fall to tough West Point team

Wynot — The Wynot Lady Blue Devils suffered their first setback of the 20-21 basketbal season last week, but bounced back to earn a big conference win.

On Thursday night Wynot travelled to West Point to take on the Guardian Angels Central Catholic Lady Blue Jays, losing 56- 39.

Then Friday, the Lady Devils got back on the winning track with a 54-31 win in a Lewis and Clark conference game against the Osmond Lady Tigers.

In Thursday’s game, the Lady Blue Devils would dig themselves into a big 27-9 first half hole that they were unable to recover from as the Lady Jays showed why they are one of better teams in the state.

The Guardian Angels got a solid performance from Breanna Rief, who hit a trio of 3-pointers and went five of six from the charity stripe to lead all scorers with her 20 points. Sophia Hass just missed double figures with nine points and Livia Hunke hit a pair of treys and contributed eight points to the win.

Wynot was led by Karley Heimes who got 10 of her 11 points from the free-throw line. Kendra Pinkelman finished with seven points and Amber Lawson drained a pair of 3-pointers for her six points.

The Lady Jays would get off to a fast start with Leah Jansen’s six points and four points by Brandi Doernemann, as they raced to an 18-6 first quarter lead.

Autumn Lawson hit a 3-pointer to lead Wynot’s offense. In the second quarter, Wynot went cold scoring only three free throws in the period. GACC got five points from Brenna Rief and built a 27-9 halftime lead.

Wynot tried to keep up in the third quarter led by five points from Kendra Pinkelman and a 3-pointer from Autumn Lawson. Guardian Angels got seven points from Brianna Rief and five points from Sophia Hass as they increased their lead to 43-23 going into the final quarter.

In the fourth, Wynot got five points from Karley Heimes and a 3-pointer each from Amber Lawson and Lauren Haberman but GACC countered with seven more points from Brianna Rief and a pair of 3-pointers by Livia Hunke to maintain their lead and earn the 56-39 win.

On Friday, Wynot got back into action when they took on the Osmond Lady Tigers in a conference matchup. Wynot broke open a tight game with an 18-6 third quarter run and then went on to the 54-31 win.

Wynot was led by the strong inside play of Karley Heimes, who led all scorers with 17 points. Autumn Lawson finished with eight and Edyn Sudbeck added seven points. Osmond was led by Macy Aschoff with

Wynot got off to an early lead with a trey by Lauren Haberman and a conventional three points from Krystal Sudbeck, along with some balanced scoring to give the Lady Devils the 14-8 advantage. Grace Gansebom hit a pair of buckets to lead Osmond.

Three-pointers from Kiera Moes and Cali Gotz rallied the Lady Tigers in the second quarter as they cut the Wynot lead to 25-21 at halftime. Karley Heimes led Wynot with her five points in the period.

In the third quarter, Wynot’s defense shu down the Tigers as the home team went on an 18-6 run lead by seven more points from Karley Heimes and pair of baskets by Edyn Sudbeck that allowed the Lady Devils to open up a 43-27 margin. Osmond was led b Macy Aschoff with four points.

In the final quarter, the Lady Devils got a 3-pointer from Edyn Sudbeck and baskets off the bench from Amy Tramp and Myra Sudbeck as they pulled away for the 54-31 win.

Wynot hosted Homer Tuesday and travels to Wausa on Friday night.
