Wynot girls claim L&C title

LAUREL — The Wynot Lady Blue Devils reign supreme in the Lewis and Clark Conference this year.

The top-seeded Lady Devils defeated second-seed Ponca in three grueling sets in Tuesday’s Conference title game.

Wynot set the tone, controlling the net early to defeat the Lady Indians, 25-17, in the first set. Ponca stormed back in the second set but was unable to hold the lead at the end, as the Lady Devils pulled out the 28-26 second-set win. The third set was also an emotion-charged back and forth affair with Wynot pulling out the 25-23 decision for the title.

The win pushes Wynot to 21-3 entering SubDistricts.

The Lady Devils now have the most NSAA Power Points of any Class D2 team.

Wynot’s Big Blue attack was led Tuesday by Whitney Hochstein, who dominated her Ponca foes for 10 kills. Karley Heimes and Kaitlyn Heimes also had solid games at the net, both slamming over seven kills.

The Wynot defense was led by Katelyn Heine, who was all over the court, coming up with a game-high 30 digs. Noelle Wieseler was also a big defensive contributor with 19 digs.

Wynot Coach Tammy Wieseler was pleased with her team’s effort.

“The girls came ready to play. They really played well as a team and were firing on all cylinders,” she said. “They stayed very composed under pressure.”
