Wynot Expos earn first round win at State

Posted in:

MITCHELL, S.D. — If all goes well, the Wynot Expos could be playing in a Class B quarterfinal at the South Dakota Amateur baseball tournament.

That will all depend on how the Expos did late Tuesday night against the Dell Rapids Mudcats, who headed into that second-round clash on the heels of a 15-0 rout of Lake Norden, while Wynot (11-9) pulled out a 9-2 win over Four Corners in its playoff opener.

That potential quarterfinal would take place at 5:30 p.m.

Four Corners jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Justin Allen scored on an Andrew Coverdale single.

The Expos responded when Lee Heimes and Jackson Sudbeck scored on a Scott Morrison single in the second, then Morrison came in on a Ryan Heimes sacrifice.

The Expos then took a 4-1 lead in the third frame when Dawson Sudbeck scored on a Landon Wieseler ground-out.

Morrison led the Expos on the night with three hits. Morrison and Lee Heimes each had two RBIs.

Jalen Wieseler led Wynot on the mound, allowing two runs on 10 hits in nine innings.

Jeremy Hand took the loss for Four Corners. He surrendered six runs on seven hits in five innings.

“Offensively, we put pressure on them by getting players on base and coming up with some key hits,” Expos coach Lee Heimes said. “We kept the pressure on by stealing some bases and making them have some errors. Our pitching attacked the hitters and the defense made plays behind the pitcher.

“We were aggressive in all three phases of baseball: Hitting, pitching, and defense.”

Wynot benefitted from the assistance of six Four Corners errors, as it fell behind early, 1-0, after an inning of play.

Wynot scored three times in the second inning and would lead the rest of the way. Scott Morrison hit a two-run single to bring in Heimes and Jackson Sudbeck. Two errors by Four Corners allowed Morrison to advance to third where he tagged up to score on a Ryan Heimes sacrifice fly.

The Expos finished with 13 hits with Morrison leading the way with three base knocks. Lee Heimes and Nate Wieseler each added two hits apiece. Morrison and Heimes each drove in two runs.

All told, the Expos had four extra-base hits.

Jalen Wieseler pitched nine innings to go the distance and scattered 10 hits but did not allow Four Corners to produce any big innings. He struck out two and walked three allowing only one earned run.

“It was a great team effort, and we all were part of the win,” Lee Heimes said. “(Dell Rapids) have two very good pitchers and they swing the bat well. They will be a tough opponent.

“It was very important to win the first game in the tournament. We played well but we still have room to improve. I think we have a game plan going in and we believe and trust in each other that we can get it done.”

Four Corners 1 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 —2

Wynot 0 3 1 0 1 1 1 2 —9
