Wynot ends Wildcats’ season in SubDistricts

WALTHILL — The Wynot Blue Devils and the Hartington Newcastle Wildcats battled in the opening round of their SubDistrict played Tuesday night.

The Blue Devils built up a 14-point lead over the first three quarters and then had to withstand a fourth quarter comeback attempt by the Wildcats to advance. The Devils battled the Walthill Blue Jays in the next round. Hartington Newcastle’s season comes to an end as they finish the season with a 8-13 record.

Wynot was led by Carson Wieseler with 14 points and Zack Foxhoven was right behind with his 13 points.

The Wildcats’ Riley Sudbeck would hit four three-pointers on his way to 16 points to take top scoring honors. Cole Roesner finished with nine points and Cole Heimes and Brayden Lammers each dropped in eight points to help the Wildcats offense.

The teams battled on an even keel in the opening period. The Wildcats got treys by Cole Heimes and Cole Roesner and a conventional bucket each from Riley Sudbeck and Austin Sudbeck.

Wynot countered with seven points from Carson Wieseler and buckets inside from Chase Schroeder and Kotner Koch. A late three pointer by Wieseler gave the Blue Devils the 14-11 advantage.

The Blue Devils would inch away in the second quarter as they went on a 13-7 run. Zack Foxhoven hit for six points and Carson Wieseler added five points to his totals to lead Wynot.

Brayden Lammers worked the inside as he had five of the Wildcats seven points in the quarter and Wynot increased the lead to 27-18 at halftime.

The third quarter was similar to the second quarter. Wynot put together a 13-8 run to increase their lead to 40-26 with one period left in the game. Cooper Oligmueller came off the bench to spark the run leading the way with six points. Foxhoven, Heine and Schroeder all contributed a basket.

HNS got a pair of three pointers from Riley Sudbeck and another basket by Cole Rosener. as the Wildcats tried to rally in the final frame. Riley Sudbeck hit twice from distance, Cole Heimes contributed five points and Cole Roesner had a pair of baskets to fuel a 17-12 run. Unfortunately, it was a case of too little too late as Wynot earned the 52-43 win.
