Wynot earns close wins at Wausa, Randolph

RANDOLPH — The Wynot Blue Devils picked up a pair of wins over conference foes last week but they had to earn them as both were tightly contested ball games.

On Friday, Wynot needed an 18-10 run late in the third quarter to open up some breathing space as they went on to down the Wausa Vikings 55-49 at their place.

On Saturday night, it was another away game, as the Blue Devils ventured to Randolph to battle with the Cardinals.

In this one as well, the Blue Devils built a lead after three periods only to see it diappear in a furious rally by the Cardinals in the final frame. Wynot hit just enough freethrows down the stretch to escape with the 50-49 win.

On Friday, Garrett Lange provided the offense inside and Anthony Haberman provided it from outside as they finished with 19 and 17 points respectively to help the Blue Devils to the win.

Wausa was led by Cory Schumacher with 12 points. Jaxson Claussen contributed 10 points and Addison Smith just missed double figures with nine points.

In the opening quarter, the two teams traded baskets. Cory Schumacher hita pair of baskets and Brandon Kristensen had three points to lead Wausa. Wynot kept pace thanks to six points by Anthony Haberman and a putback inside by Garrett Lange, as the score was knotted 11-11 after one.

The chess match continued in the second quarter. Wausa got a trey by Addison Smith and three points from Jaxson Claussen. Zack Foxhoven’s long 3-pointer cancelled theirs and Garrett Lange went to work from the low block area, dumping in seven points, as Wynot held the 25-22 lead at halftime.

Wausa continued to put on pressure with four more points each from Addison Smith and Jaxson Claussen. Wynot would go on a mini run from long distance as Dylan Heine, Anthony Haberman and a 3-pointer at the buzzer by Trystan Heimes, helped to maintain a 44-32 lead going into the final period of play.

In the fourth quarter, the Vikings would rally behind seven points from Jon Nissen and five more points from Jaxson Claussen. The Vikings would cut the Blue Devil lead down to two possessions, but Wynot hit 7-10 freethrows down the stretch to fend off the challenge and earn the 55-49 win.

On Saturday it was another close game for the Blue Devils when this contest went down to wire before Wynot would escape with the 50-49 win. A desperate rally in the final minutes of game just fell short when a last second heave by the Cardinals was just off the mark allowing the Blue Devils to pick up the Conference win.

The Cardinal got an outstanding game from Collyn Beal who scored 13 of his game-high 22 points in that fourth quarter comeback. Justin Haselhorst was all over the court and finished with 17 points for the Cardinals.

Anthony Haberman continued his steady play and ended with 17 points to lead the Blue Devils offense. Peyton Wieseler contribute key free throws down the stretch and finished with 9 ponts. Garrett Lange had to battle a couple trees inside and contributed seven points. Dylan Heine, Zack Foxhoven and Jack Kuchta all come off the bench to hit three pointers to bolster the Blue Devils offense.

Scoring was at premium in the opening quarter. Anthony Haberman hit for five points and Garrett Lange had a lay-in plus one to lead the Blue Devils.

Randolph countered from long range with a pair of 3-pointers by Justin Haselhorst and one by Collyn Beal as Wynot clung to the 11-9 early lead.

Dylan Heine drained a 3-pointer for the Blue Devils in the second quarter, but any other offense was hard to find. Justin Haselhorst hit a pair of layups and Collyn Beal connected on a floater in the lane as Randolph took a 19-18 lead at intermission.

The Blue Devils would rally behind balanced scoring in the third quarter.

The big shots were 3-pointers by Dylan Heine, Zack Foxhoven and Jack Kuchta. The Cardinals were also clicking from long range as they got treys by Collyn Beal, Jacob Calder and Justin Haselhorst. The Blue Devils had expanded their lead to 37-30 going into the final period of play.

Collyn Beal got the hot hand for Randolph in the fourth quarter, as he would go off for 13 points to try and rally his team. Anthony Haberman dumped in seven points for the Blue Devils and they hit nine of 14 free throws.

Tristan Mosel hit a pair of basket to cut Wynot lead to 50-49 with 1.9 second to play. The Blue Devils would miss a couple of free throws at the end, but the desperate last second toss by the Cardinals missed and Wynot escaped with the 50-49 win.
