Wynot digs out of early hole to stay undefeated on the season

Posted in:

IRENE, S.D. — The Wynot Blue Devils travelled over to South Dakota for a basketball matchup against the Irene-Wakonda Eagles Tuesday.

The Blue Devils had to face a couple of new challenges in this game.

First, it was the use of a 35-second shot clock on every possession. Since Wynot plays an up-tempo game, that was not a big factor in the contest.

The second challenge was having to battle a beheamoth in the post.

Jake Kuhl is listed as the Eagles seven-foot center and can be a force in the paint. Kuhl got his share of rebounds and blocked shots but the Blue Devils were able to wear the Eagles down and pulled away in the second half to earn the 52-40 win and stay undefeated for the season.

Dylan Heine led the scoring for the Blue Devils with 12 points. Both Chase Schroeder and Carson Wieseler played well in the first half, as well, both contributing nine points to the win.

Irene Wakonda was led by Dashel Spurrell with 16 points. Jake Kuhl and Garrett Libby each hit for seven points to help the Eagles offense.

Wynot got off to a sluggish start as Carson Wieseler led the Blue Devils with 5 first quarter points. Irene-Wakonda got four points from Miles Pollman and a couple of treys from Dashel Spurrell and Garrett Libby as Wynot was in a hole trailing 14-9 at the end of the first period.

Irene Wakonda got 4 more points from Dashel Spurrell and trey by Jake Kuhl in the second quarter.

Wynot would rally behind 7 big points from Chase Schroeder, four more points from Carson Wieseler and a trey by Colin Wieseler as they went on an 18-12 run to earn the 2726 halftime advantage.

Dashel Spurrell’s three and couple of free throws gave the Eagles the lead back at the half way mark of the third quarter. Dylan Heine would answer the call for the Blue Devils as he drained three long treys from deep to boost the Blue Devils to a 40-33 lead going into the final quarter of play.

The fourth quarter belonged to the Blue Devils. Joseph Sudbeck hit from behind the arc, Zack Foxhoven drove to the hoop for a pair of buckets and the Blue Devils went 5 for 6 from the charity stripe to maintain the lead and earned the 52-40 win.
