Wynot, Crofton both earn league wins

Posted in:

WYNOT — A busy week for the Wynot Expos saw them split a four-game slate including a 1-1 mark against Yankton teams out of the South Central baseball league.

The Crofton Bluejays split two games this week.

Wynot (3-6) dropped a 3-1 decision to the Yankton Tappers before bouncing back with a 14-4 home win over the Yankton Lakers.

In the defeat against the league leaders, Scott Morrison pitched nine innings and gave up one earned run, while Lee Heimes doubled in the team’s only run.

In the win against the Lakers, Dawson Sudbeck (4-for-4, two triples), Kyle Wiepen (3-for-3, RBI double), Justin Lange (3-for-3, three RBI double) and Jalen Wieseler (seven innings pitched complete game) set the marker.

They followed that win with an 8-5 win over Freeman in Wynot as Jalen Wi eseler went 3-for-5 with an RBI, Jackson Sudbeck also went 3-for-5 with an RBI, Ryan Heimes went 2-for-2 with a triple and RBI and Jackson Sudbeck pitched all nine innings for the win.

The Expos ended the week with a 14-13 non-league loss at Dimock/Emery on Saturday in a game that went 13 innings.

Cliff Kephart went 3-for-5 with a homer and five RBI while Landon and Nate Wieseler each went 2-for-4 with the former driving in three runs.

“We had our starting pitchers pitch deep into games, our hitting is starting to come around and our defense is getting better,” Lee Heimes said. “We need to continue to get better with our defense. I feel we are improving in all areas and we have developed some depth as we start the second half of our season.”

The Expos played Menno in Wynot on Tuesday and travel to play at Irene 7 p.m. Thursday and Crofton at 7 p.m. the following day.

Crofton moved to 4-5 this summer with a 5-0 win over Menno and an 8-1 defeat to Tabor.

“We got a big performance on the mound this week from Tyler Priest, who threw a complete game shutout on 86 pitches against Menno,” Crofton coach Ben Hegge said. “Tyler Zimmerman and Alec Martin had two hits in that game as well. We are at the point in the season where pitchers are able to go deeper into games. We have a busy stretch of games here in the next week with four games in seven days.

“We will learn a lot about our team this week. With postseason tight around the corner we will continue to work to produce runs offensively and try to limit opponents offense on defense and on the mound.”

Crofton played at the Yankton Lakers on Sunday and travel to Freeman for a 7 p.m. Thursday game before hosting Wynot on Friday.
