Wynot completes regular season with another big win

Wynot — The Wynot Blue Devils built a 46-0 lead against the Winside Wildcats before calling off the dogs in the fourth quarter as they won their fifth straight game, 46-20.

Anthony Haberman led the Blue Devils with touchdown runs of 4, 1 and 60 yards. Owen Sudbeck had a pair of touchdowns and two PAT runs while Joseph Sudbeck picked up his first touchdown of the year.

Haberman finished with 138 rushing yards while Sudbeck was right behind with 130 yards. Winside was led by the Gabe

Winside was led by the Gabe Escalante, who rushed for over 100 yard and Cayden Ellis completions for over 100 yards

On defense for the Blue Devils Anthony Haberman led the way with 12 tackles while Peyton Wieseler and Zack Foxhoven each finished with seven tackles from their linebacker spots.

Defensive leader for the Wildcats was Gabe Escalante with 11 tackles and Art Escalante had a fumble recovery.

Wynot drove for a score on their first possession as they marched 63 yards in 10 plays all on the ground.

Owen Sudbeck’s 24 yard run was the big gainer in the drive. Anthony Haberman would score on a three-yard push up the middle. Haberman also ran in the PAT as Wynot had a quick 8-0 lead.

Winside would put together a drive of their own helped by a 40 yard run by Gabe Escalante but the Blue Devils defense stiffened and stalled the drive at the five-yard line.

Wynot went three-and-out and were forced to punt. Winside got a 20-yard scamper by Gabe Escalante but the drive ended on a Trystan Heimes sack on fourth and goal at the five-yard line.

Neither team would threaten from there on in the first period as it ended with Wynot holding the 8-0 lead.

In the second frame, Wynot’s offense took off, adding a pair of scores. The first came on a sixplay drive led by a pair of 14- yard runs by Owen Sudbeck. The second resulted in a touchdown. Haberman added the PAT as Wynot’s lead went to 16-0.

Winside was able to move the ball, just not put it in the endzone. A 30-yard run by Gabe Escalante put the Wildcats deep in Blue Devil territory, but a Peyton Wieseler sack on fourth-and-long stalemated the drive.

Wynot went on a 10-play drive to paydirt. The drive featured the scrambling of Anthony Haberman and a seven-yard first down catch by Colin Wieseler that helped keep the drive alive as the Devils marched to their third touchdown of the night. Anthony Haberman dove in from the oneyard line and Owen Sudbeck ran in the PAT to give Wynot the 24-0 halftime lead.

Wynot dominated the third quarter while Winside was plagued by turnovers.

A Colin Wieseler interception stopped Winside’s offense on their first series. On the first play from scrimmage for the Devils, Anthony Haberman turned up the left side and galloped 60 yards for the score. The PAT pass fell incomplete but Wynot was cruising 30-0.

Winside fumbled on their next possession and Jack Kuchta recovered it for the Devils deep in Winside territory. A 13 yard screen to Colin Wieseler set up a 3 yard TD run by Wieseler. Haberman would find Trystan Heimes for the PAT as Wynot’s lead had ballooned to 38-0 at the end of the third quarter.

Coach Heimes emptied his bench in the fourth quarter but the offense continued to roll. Dylan Heine found Joseph Sudbeck on a deep crossing pattern and he bolted 47 yards for the score. Heine then hit Carson Wieseler for the PAT to make it 46-0.

Winside put three late scores on the board. The first came on a 66-yard kickoff return by Cayden Ellis. The PAT failed and the Wildcats had avoided a shutout.

Wynot fumbled the Winside kickoff and Art Escalante recovered it as the Wildcats had good field position. They would capitalize when Gabe Escalante dove in from the three-yard line. A pitch sweep to Cayden Ellis added the PAT to make the score 46-14.

Winside’s final score of the night came in the final minute of the game when Escalante hooked up with Cayden Ellis on a 40-yard bomb down to the five-yard line. Escalante and Ellis also hooked up from the five-yard line for the score. The PAT failed making it 46-20 in favor of the Blue Devils.
