Wynot boys split a pair to open the new basketball season

Posted in:

WYNOT — The Wynot Blue Devils opened their 2019-2020 basketball season with a trip to Bloomfield to take on the Bees.

It did not go well for the Blue Devils as they were ice cold shooting the ball and had 20 turnovers, helping the Bees roll to the 56-32 win.

Long scoring droughts in the first and third quarter would play a big part in the Blue Devils’ demise.

Bloomfield was led by the stellar play of their point guard Braden Eisenhower who led all scorers with 18 points.

The Bees also got doublefigure scoring from Dade Davis with 14 points and Gabe Lauch contributed 11 points to the win.

Wynot was paced by Garrett Lange with eight points and Anthony Haberman with seven points.

The basket seemed to have a lid on it for the Blue Devils in the first quarter as they got a lone trey by Anthony Haberman and that was it for their scoring.

Meanwhile, Bloomfield got eight points from Braden Eisenhower and seven points from Dade Davis along with balanced scoring as the Bees raced to a 19-3 early lead.

Wynot would show some signs of life in the second quarter with four points each from Garrett Lange and Anthony Haberman but Bloomfield would minimize the damage with three pointers by Dade Davis and Cody Bruegman as the Bees lead 31-17 at the half.

Wynot tried to rally from long range in the second half but they went 1-20 from behind the arc for the game.

Bloomfield continued to build on their lead in the third quarter as they got a couple of baskets each on the inside from Gabe Lauch and Dalton Gieselman and the Bees increased their lead to 49-20 going into the final frame.

In the fourth quarter Wynot got five points from Garrett Lange but Dade Davis hit a pair of baskets for Bloomfield as they earned the win by a final score of 56-32.

The Blue Devils were glad to get back to friendly confines of their own gym on Friday night as they hosted the Winside Wildcats.

Wynot would come out of the gate firing on all cylinders as they built a 21-2 early lead and cruised to the 47-14 win.

The rout started with defense as the visiting Wildcats had trouble with Wynot’s press and turnovers led to numerous transition baskets.

Wynot was led by Anthony Haberman, who dropped in a game-high 14 points. Peyton Wieseler dumped in nine points and the Devils got six points each from Garrett Lange and Jack Kuchta for a balanced attack.

Dean Kruger and Dax Behemer led the Winside Wildcats with four points each.

Wynot would start off fast in the first quarter as they got five points each from Peyton Wieseler and Anthony Haberman and a lone three pointer from Owen Sudbeck as they roared to a 21-2 first quarter advantage.

Winside tried to make a comeback in the second quarter with buckets by Dax Behemer and Dean Krueger but only hit 3-8 free throws when the clock was stopped.

Anthony Haberman hit a trio of three pointers and Jack Kuchta contributed a pair of buckets as the Blue Devils increased their lead to 36-9 at the half.

In the third quarter scoring would slow down for the Blue Devils.

Winside got a basket each from Behemer and Krueger and Wynot countered with buckets by Trystan Heimes, Hunter Heimes and Garrett Lange to keep the big lead at 44-14 going into the final period of play.

In the final frame, reserves would mop up as Wynot evened their record at 1-1 with the lopsided 44-14 win.

The Blue Devils will face a couple of tough teams this week when West Point Guardian Angel Central Catholic comes calling on Thursday and then they travel to Osmond on Friday night.
