Wynot boys split pair of conference games

WYNOT — The Wynot Blue Devils gained a split in a pair of conference games this past week.

On Friday, they gained a hard fought victory over the Wausa Vikings by a score of 45-42. Then on Saturday night, they dropped a game to Randolph by a 40-31 margin.

Friday night, Wynot got balanced scoring, lead by Hunter Heimes’ 11 points. Anthony Haberman chipped in with nine points and Trystan Heimes and Peyton Wieseler helped the Blue Devils’ cause with eight points each.

Wausa’s Jason Claussen hit a trio of three-pointers and would take scoring honors for the game with his 15 points, and he got support from Skyles Kinkaid who hit for 12 points for the Vikings.

In the opening quarter, Wynot got a trey and five points from Haberman and a conventional three from Hunter Heimes. Wausa got four points from Kinkaid and a three-pointer from Claussen as they earned an 11-8 lead.

Wynot would rally in the second quarter with another trey by Haberman and buckets by Trystan Heimes and Garrett Lange in the paint. Wausa got four more points from Kinkaid and a basket each from Ethan Baue and Cory Schumacher, but the Blue Devils had tied it at 19-19 going into halftime.

Hunter Heimes would dump in six points to lead the Blue Devils in the third quarter. Jack Kuchta added a three-pointer and baskets by Trystan Heimes and Wieseler sparked a 13-8 run by Wynot. Claussen hit a trey for the Viking and some free throws were all the offense they could muster as the Blue Devils lead 32-27 going into the final quarter of play.

It was back and forth in the fourth quarter. Wausa got threepointers by Jonah Strong and Claussen and four more points by Kinkaid. Wynot went to work on the inside with six points from Lange and four points from Trystan Heimes along with a floater in the lane by Owen Sudbeck as the Blue Devils fought off the comeback attempt to take the 45-42 win.

On Saturday, the Devils took on the Randolph Cardinals. The Devils fell behind early then got back into the game only to see it slip away late, as the Cards earned the 40-31 win.

Wynot was led by Anthony Haberman who hit five three-pointers to account for his 15 points. Hunter Heimes continued his improved play, chipping in with seven points to help the Blue Devil offense.

Randolph got double-figure scoring from Carter Schnoor who tied for scoring honors with 15, and Justin Haselhorst, who buried three treys on his way to an 11-point showing.

Wynot seemed to have little energy in the first quarter as they struggled. Randolph got seven points from Schnoor and a pair of threepointers by Haselhorst as they raced to the 17-4 lead.

Wynot’s defense showed up in the second quarter and their offense started to hit form long range. A pair of treys by Haberman and one by Owen Sudbeck sparked an 11-8 run by the Blue Devils. The Cardinals got a trey by Keaton Backhaus, as Wynot cut the lead to under 10 points, 24-15, at halftime.

In the third quarter, the two teams traded bombs. Wynot got two more three-pointers by Haberman and followed off an offense rebound by Hunter Heimes.

Randolph countered with two treys by Backhaus and a late one by Haselhorst as the maintained a 42-31 lead.

Wynot rallied to cut the game to two possessions early in the final quarter. Another trey by Haberman and field goals by Hunter Heimes and Peyton Wieseler cut the lead to five points. Wynot was hurt down the stretch by hitting only 1-4 freethrows while the Cards sealed the game hitting 6-6 from the line for the 40-31 win.
