Wynot boys drop a pair of contests

Wynot — The Wynot Blue Devils lost a pair of close ball games this past week as their season record slipped to 2-2 with the losses.

On Thursday night, Wynot would take on the Guardian Angel Central Catholic Blue Jays. The two teams would battle for three and one half quarters before the Blue Devils saw the game slip away in the end and West Point earned the 42-35 win. Then on Friday night the Osmond Tigers came calling and used a fourth quarter rally to defeat Wynot by a final score of 57-51.

On Thursday night the game was a real defensive struggle. Wynot and GACC battled back and forth into the fourth quarter before the Blue Jays would hit a trio of 3-pointers late to pull off the 42-35 win.

Wynot got double figure scoring from Peyton Wieseler and Anthony Haberman with 13 and 11 points respective. West Point was led by Nate Niewohner with 12 points and helped by Ben Urich with 10 points.

Tight man-to-man pressure and cold shooting was the story in the opening quarter and the two teams were tied at 4-4 after one period.

In the second quarter, Wynot got four points in the paint from Garrett Lange and four points by Anthony Haberman.

GACC countered with a 3-pointer each from Nate Niewohner and Kolton Kralik as the Blue Jays clung to a 15-14 halftime lead.

Scoring continued to be at a premium in the third quarter as well.

GACC got a basket each from Nate Niewohner, Ben Urich and Brandon Duhsman. Anthony Haberman hit a long 3-pointer from the top of the key and Trystan Heimes dumped in a basket off an offensive rebound as GACC maintained a one-point lead at 23-22 going into the final period.

In the fourth quarter, Nate Neiwohner drained a pair of back-to-back 3-pointers and Brendan Rief also hit from behind the arc to give the Blue Jays a lead.

For the second night in a row the Wynot Blue Devils would see a game slip away in the final quarter as they lost to the Osmond Tigers 57-51 Friday.

Cold free throw shooting continues to contribute to the Blue Devils demise as they were eight for 20 from the line while the Tigers went 15 for 23 for the game. Osmond got a game high 21 points from their senior guard Graysen Schultze, who hit a trio of 3-pointers and went seven for eight from the line in the critical final quarter to help his team to the win. Ryan Schmit also had double figures with his 13 points to aid the Tigers offense.

Anthony Haberman continues his steady play for the Blue Devils as he connected on a trio of 3-pointers and finished with 17 points. Owen Sudbeck was hot in the first half also, connecting three times from behind the arc and finishing with 10 points.

The two teams seemed evenly matched in the opening quarter. Osmond got five points from Steven Hasler and four points from Ryan Schmit. Wynot hit from long range twice by Owen Sudbeck and once by Anthony Haberman, as Wynot held a 13-12 early advantage.

In the second quarter, Osmond got five points from Graysen Schultze and Ryan Schmit. Wynot got four points from Peyton Wieseler a fade away 3-pointer from the right corner by Dylan Heine and banked in 3-pointer at the buzzer by Owen Sudbeck to give Wynot a 26-25 halftime lead.

In the third quarter, Anthony Haberman hit for seven points to give Wynot a lead, but Graysen Schultze drained back-to-back 3-pointers to close the gap to 41-39 going into the final frame.

In the fourth quarter, Anthony

Haberman hit for five points and Colin Wieseler had a lay-in, but the Blue Devils could not pull away. Osmond got a bucket from Zach Humwaldt and got 13 of their 16 final points from the free-throw line to steal away the 57-51 win. Wynot hosts the Homer Knights on Tuesday for their next game.
