Wynot aerial attack sinks Howells-Dodge

WYNOT - The Wynot Blue Devils knocked off one of the top teams in Class D2 football Friday as they downed the Howells Dodge Jaguars 32-20. This game featured the quick strike aerial attack of the Blue Devils against the ground pound offense of the Jaguars.

Wynot held a big advantage through the air.

Howells Dodge had a 233-57 advantage rushing the ball, but Wynot countered with a 278-69 advantage through “ This was a very physical game, but I thought our boys held up well as a team” said Wynot head coach Steve Heimes.

Wynot was led by Dylan Heine who completed 22-33 passing attempts for 278 yards. Carson Wieseler had 12 catches for 200 yards.

Wynot’s defense was anchored by Zack Foxhoven with 19 tackles, Dylan Heine with 13 tackles and an interception. Andrew Haberman also added 13 stops. Carson Wieseler had a key fumble recovery, as well.

Howells-Dodge’s defensive unit got 13 tackles from Hunter Luther, six each by Dylan Brichcek and Nathan Hegeman along with an interception each by Lane Belina and Ryan Nelson.

Wynot got on the scoreboard first in this one when Dylan Heine found Carson Wieseler behind the Jaguars secondary and connected for a 30-yard post route. The PAT was no good as Wynot held the early 6-0 lead.

The Jaguars answered at the 6:48 mark when Hunter Luther capped a Jaguar drive on a 29-yard touchown run up the middle. Luther also ran in the PAT as Howells Dodge took an 8-6 lead at the end of the opening quarter.

At the 6:48 mark of the second quarter Zack Foxhoven took a swing pass on the right wing and galloped 36 yards to retake the lead for the home team. The PAT pass attempt was incomplete as Wynot held a 12-8 advantage.

Wynot would put one more score on the board before the half on a 16-yard strike from Dylan Heine to Joesph Sudbeck. The PAT pass was batted down but the Blue Devils had earned a 18-8 half time lead.

Early in the third quarter the Jaguars Lane Belina would find an opening on the right side and bolt 38 yards to paydirt. The PAT run was no good Wynot lead was cut to an 18-14 score.

Wynot would rally back on their first play of their next possession Dylan Heine would find Carson Wieseler open in the seam and connect for a 60 yard scoring bomb. Chase Schroeder added the PAT pass as Wynot had widened their lead to 26-14. The Jaguars would go on a march on their next possession but their drive was stopped by an outstanding defensive play by Wynot corner back Carson Wieseler. The Jaguars running back broke free on his way to the endzone but Wieseler would punch the ball out from behind at the one yard line and recover it in the endzone for a touchback.

The Blue Devils would move the ball out with a first down but they were stopped and force to punt. The ball was shanked out of bounds giving the Jaguars a short field to work with. The Jaguars would covert a fourth down play on a ten yard dump pass to Oscar Dominguez. Landon Dobbins would sneak in from the one yard line to cap the drive. The PAT run was no good as the visitors had cut Wynot lead to 26-20.

Wynot put together a game-saving drive as they overcame a holding penalty and bad snap to salt away the big win. Dylan Heine dove in over the right side for the final Devil score, as Wynot had some breathing room leading 32-20.

Dodge added one more score on a short dive by Lane Dobbins set up by a Ryan Nelson interception.

Dodge held on their next defensive set but when on offense their final play was intercepted by Dylan Heine as Wynot earned the upset win 32-26.

Wynot travels to Randolph Thursday for a game against the Cardinals.
