Wortmann will take to the hardcourt one final time before wrapping up her career

Posted in:

HARTINGTON — Cedar Catholic High School alum Brynn Wortmann made a decision as she graduated as a Lady Trojan last month, that she wouldn’t play anymore basketball once college beckoned.

The future Wayne State student, who admits that the game has played such a central role in her life at Cedar, also realized that playing a little bit more wasn’t such a bad idea.

Wortmann has been selected to participate in the Northeast Nebraska Girls Basketball All-Star Game at Northeast Nebraska Community College June 18 and to be able to lace it up one more time is definitely an exciting prospect for the leading scorer from a Trojans team that advanced to the Class D1 semifinals last winter.

“I am really excited to play with a lot of really good girls,” Brynn Wortmann said. “I thought I was checked out after State and thought it was over, but it’s good to at least get one more. I think I am ready to go. I haven’t been doing much, but basketball games are different for me: Once I get into it, I don’t really get tired.

This game will be different, she said.

“I am focused on other things and not how tired I am and just about playing,” she said.

Cedar Catholic head coach Craig Wortmann notes the contributions Brynn provided for the Lady Trojans over her four years.

“Brynn is a very dedicated player that has taken the time to become a great player,” Craig Wortmann said. “Over the past year, Brynn really grew into an all-around player. Her leadership is what became her biggest improvement. She helped her teammates to improve so that we could make another deep run in the state tournament. I am very blessed to have coached a player like Brynn.”

Brynn admitted she entertained an offer to play collegiately at Northeast Community College, but doesn’t feel the same pull to play and will focus on her studies in nursing and feed a competitive fix in intramurals.

“I’ll be doing that kind of stuff,” she said. “It’s crazy because so much of my life until this point, has been basketball. Having it all over is going to be definitely closing a big chapter of my life. I loved it while it lasted.

“Do I have a goal for the game? To not look like a fool. I know these other girls are really good. I want to get at least some points. I am not there to just show up. I want to do something there.”

She certainly did plenty for the Lady Trojans.

“It was by far the biggest impact on my life in high school,” Brynn Wortmann said. “I wasn’t the biggest fan of volleyball – I was just there to be a part of something and not be too lazy before basketball. It’s going to be hard watching games at Cedar when I am not there playing.
