Wildcats to face state-rated Wakefield

Posted in:

The Hartington-Newcastle Wildcats football team face a “win or go home” scenario this week.

The Wildcats fell 46-18 last week against Elkhorn Valley to fall to 1-4 overall and 0-3 in district action.

Their next foe won’t make things much easier when the Wildcats travel to state-rated Wakefield Friday.

“Wakefield is a big, physical football team that is going to run the ball at you with two strong backs in Justin Erb and Blake Brown,” Uldrich said. “They are not a team eligible for the playoffs, so they will be focused in, ready to go, hoping to finish their year with an 8-0 record.”

It’s been a rough season with games canceled due to COVID-19 and the consistent uncertainty of the season for the Wildcats who have managed to make things work in a positive direction.

“We have come a long way in the last few weeks, but unfortunate mistakes, penalties and turnovers cost us a game this past week,” Uldrich said. “We’re going to have to push through that disappointment mentally so that we can prepare for another good football opponent.”

Wynot keeps playoff hopes intact

The Wynot Blue Devils are 4-1 overall as the season finale beckons with Winside coming to town for a 7 p.m., Friday rumble.

The Blue Devils are coming off of a 42-12 win over Osmond.

Anthony Haberman (36 carries, 261 yards, two touchdowns) and Owen Sudbeck (24 carries, 110 yards, two touchdowns) spearheaded the running game, while Colin Wieseler and Trystan Heimes each caught a touchdown pass from Haberman.

“Winside will be another good test,” Wynot head coach Steve Heimes said. “They have some young but very good players on their team. We need to work hard in practice for the next week and the playoffs.

“The playoff picture is setting up well for us, but we will not know where we sit until after next week’s game.”

LCC falls short against Wakefield

The Bears are now 5-2 overall and 3-1 in district play after a narrow 30-24 defeat against Wakefield.

LCC will end the regular season Thursday at Lutheran NE.

“We played a very good and physical team in Wakefield,” LCC head coach Pat Arens said. “In the first half, we struggled with blocking and tackling at times.”

Coach Arens said it took his team some time to make the right adjustments.

“When we got things figured out, we got back in the game. I think we showed a lot of heart and pride, to come back from being down 24-0 in the early third quarter to tie it late in the fourth. We just had some mistakes late,” he said.

Evan Haisch finished with 249 yards rushing on 32 carries and three touchdowns to lead the Bears’ attack.

The Bears look good for the D1 playoffs, but state-rated Lutheran High Northeast will make the season finale a tough one.
