Wildcats earn a split in a pair of L&C games
ALLEN — The Hartington-Newcastle Wildcats won their second game of the young season with a win here over Tri County Northeast 52-35 on Dec. 12 before dropping a Lewis & Clark Conference match up with undefeated Walthill, 71-57 in Hartington on Dec. 15.
Against the Blujays, the Wildcats found themselves in a 10-0 hole to open the game then fought to get back in the contest the entire night.
“We really got off to a slow start in this game,” Hartington-Newcastle coach Tylor Fincher said. “We are starting to play better on offense and it was nice to see us get to the free throw line, we went to the line 27 times in the game - we just need to make more of them.”
After falling behind 10-0 the Wildcats won the rest of the first quarter by the score of 7-6, but trailed at the end of the stanza 16-7.
The deficit increased to 32-17 by the halftime break and Hartington-Newcastle outscored the Blujays 40-39 in the second half, but fell by the 14-point final score.
Riley Sudbeck recorded a doubledouble in the game with 13 points and 13 rebounds, Cole Heimes poured in 11 points, Brayden Lammers added nine, Dayton Sudbeck tacked on seven and Cole Rosener had six.
In the win over the Wolfpack, the Wildcats got out to a 15-10 lead at the end of the first eight minutes.
With Hartington-Newcastle up 7-6, Dayton Sudbeck canned backto- back shots in the paint to put the Wildcats up 11-6.
Heimes scored on a fast break to make it 13-8 then Cole Rosener got the final bucket of the first quarter on a lay in.
Lammers opened the second frame with a nice move in the paint which resulted in a 10-foot jumper then a Dayton Sudbeck steal and lay up made it 19-10 with 6:30 left before the intermission.
Riley Sudbeck grabbed a defensive rebound, hit Dayton Sudbeck cruising down the court then Dayton Sudbeck spotted Mason Krause breaking to the basket for a lay up to complete a 9-0 Wildcat run extending back to Cole Rosener’s bucket, which ended the first half.
The Wolfpack called a timeout with just under six minutes left in the half and the Wildcats up 21-10.
TCNE hit a 3 to make it 27-19 with just under two minutes left in the half, but a Krause free throw and back-to-back 3’s by Riley Sudbeck and Cole Rosener ended the half with Hartington-Newcastle in front, 34-19.
The team played even in the third period and the Wildcats added a basket to their advantage in the final quarter to get to the 52-35 final score.
“We played with a sense of urgency the entire game,” Fincher said. “The start of the game it was great to see how we worked together on defense to force Tri County to turn the ball over.”
Cole Rosener led the Hartington-Newcastle offensive attack with 15 points, Lammers and Heimes added eight each and Riley Sudbeck had six.
“It was nice to see some shots go in,” Fincher said “And it was nice to have a variety of players score.”
The Wildcats were set to take on Boyd County Dec. 19 to end the pre-Christmas portion of the schedule and head to the Stanton Tournament Dec. 28-29 where they will play Lutheran High NE in the first round.
