Wildcat runners claim District title

Posted in:

PIERCE — Forgive Carson Noecker if he didn’t look overly excited after winning his fourth straight District cross country title to help his team earn the District title Thursday.

It’s just all in a day’s work for the state’s record-breaking long distance runner.

Noecker will now set his sights on becoming the first male athlete in Nebraska sports history to earn four state titles. He is now tied with five others as the state’s only three-time winners. Noecker completed the 5,000-meter Pierce Community Golf Course race in 15 minutes and 7.32 seconds, almost two minutes ahead of runner-up Dyami Berridge of Winnebago.

Hartington-Newcastle posted a team total of 49 points to win the title, just one spot ahead of runner-up Wayne. Bloomfield-Wausa also scored 50 points, but ended up in third on a tie-breaker.

“Every member of our boys team showed improvements all season,” Wildcat coach Mandy Hochstein said. “We seem to be peaking at each end-of-the-season race we’ve run — second at conference and now first at districts.”

Cole Rosener also finished in the top 10, taking eighth place; Adam Elks was 18th, Alex Elks placed 22nd, Alan Santiago was 36th and Lukas Wortmann placed 40th.

“Cole Rosener has stepped up and taken a leading role,” Hochstein said. “Adam and Alex Elks are showing steady improvement and consistence in their races just at the right time of the season.”

Ava Noecker paced the Lady Wildcats with a seventh-place showing and will run at the state meet with a time of 21:41.14.

Wayne won the girls team title with the top three finishers in the district. Bloomfield-Wausa was second with 54, O’Neill was third with 62 and HNS finished one spot out of qualifying as a team in fourth with a 79.

Claire Rolfes was 22nd, Carmen Buschkamp was 25th, Isabel Rolfes was 28th, Ryell Haug was 33rd and Abby Anderson was 41st.

The 2022 NSAA State Cross Country Championships are set for Oct. 21 at the Kearney Country Club, with the first race beginning at noon. The Class C boys race is set for 12:30 p.m., while the Class C girls will start at 1:30 p.m.
