Wildcat golfers hit the links in Laurel

Posted in:

LAUREL - Hartington-Newcastle traveled to Laurel to play in the Laurel-Concord-Coleridge Invitational golf meet here April 11 at Cedar View Country Club and shot a team total of 409 which put the Wildcats 12th in the field of 15 teams.

Tekamah-Herman won the team title with a 347, four shots in front of Ponca at 351.

Homer was third at 369, Cedar Catholic was fourth at 378 and Pierce rounded out the top five after carding a 381.

For the Wildcats, Dayton Sudbeck had the low score after shooting a 93 over 18 holes.

After shooting a 50 in the opening nine holes, Sudbeck responded with a 43 on the backside.

“I settled down on the back nine,” Sudbeck said. “I had a bad hole right away and I tried to get it all back instead of just being patient and work to get going again.”

The Wildcat senior has been a member of the varsity team his four years in high school and is relying on that experience to get him where he wants to be.

“I’ve been playing golf a long time,” he said. “I’m starting to figure out you just need to concentrate on your next shot and forget about the last shot.”

Riley Sudbeck was next for Hartington-Newcastle after carding a 98, Carter Kelly came in at a 106, Barrett Bruning fired a 112 and Austin Sudbeck had a 119.

Earlier in the week, Hartington-Newcastle hosted a triangular with Bloomfield and Osmond.

The Bees had the low score in the event by shooting a 187, the Wildcats were next at 200 and the Tigers had no team score with only having two golfers.

Dayton Sudbeck led the way in the triangular with a 41. Mason Mackerprang of Bloomfield was second with a 44.

“We felt that the kids played pretty well at both of our meets this week,” said Wildcat coach Mike Johnson. “Dayton had another good day at the triangular and at the LCC invite he bounced back from a slow start and played well his second nine.”

Bruning, Kelly and Riley Sudbeck each shot a 53 in the triangular and Austin Sudbeck carded a 65.

“It was very windy at Laurel and we thought our kids did a good job of battling all day,” Johnson said. “Carter, Barrett and Austin continue to improve every day in practice and they’re doing a good job of competing hard for us at meets. We’re going to put an even bigger emphasis on our short game - if we can clean up things around the greens we should knock quite a few shots off of our team score.”

Hartington-Newcastle will be back in action April 18 at the O’Neill Invitational and April 20 at Rolling Hills for the Osmond Invitational before hosting its own tournament April 23.
