Wieseler picks up her 1,000th kill

Posted in:

LINCOLN - For the second time this volleyball season, a senior at Cedar Catholic has reached a career milestone.

Maddie Wieseler earned her 1,000th career kill in the final set against Thayer Central in the first round of the state tournament on Thursday.

Posting 12 on the night, the senior contributed to a win for her team as the Lady Trojans advanced to the semifinals.

“It means a lot,” said Wieseler. “It has been a goal of mine since I was a freshman, and I couldn’t do it without my setters for the past four years.”

She said her and her teammates knew it was her 1,000th kill, and the girls' celebration showed it as they cheered a little extra.

“Yeah, I knew, but I was just happy with both that we got the point.”

Wieseler is the second senior of the year to earn her 1,000th career kill. Jada Cattau did it earlier in the year during the Mid-States Conference Tournament.

In total, the two have set new highs at Cedar Catholic, becoming the only two in school history to accomplish such a feat. Cattau ended her career on Saturday with 1,098 career kills, and Wieseler trailed her with 1,022. The two lead by quite a margin with Lexi Steffen sitting in third with 698 kills.

Both girls surpassed the millennia mark in multiple categories. Wieseler has over 1,250 set assists as well and closed in just shy of 1,000 digs. Cattau earned her 1,000th dig close to the beginning of the senior season.

Wieseler’s volleyball career will not end here. The senior verbally committed to play for Midland University as a junior last year, and after the state championship loss to Blue Hill, she said she is ready for her next chapter.

“It will give me a lot of motivation because when I go to Midland we will be playing in this atmosphere almost every game, so it will be nice to be used to that. I am just ready for that.”
