Wieseler family pumped up after taking over Wynot Oil Company

Posted in:

WYNOT – The Steve and Tammy Wieseler family wanted to make sure a longtime Wynot business stays open.

The couple and three of their sons are the new owners of the Wynot Oil Company, which they have renamed as Wynot Oil LLC.

They took over the business Sept. 1, after purchasing it from Dennis Promes, whose parents, Jerome and Sally, owned it for 51 years.

“Dennis and Jerome Promes have built quite the business over the last 60-plus years and have always called it Wynot Oil Company, so we felt it was very important to keep the name as close to the original as possible,” Steve said.

Steve and Tammy are joined by their sons, Jalen, 24; Landon, 22; and Peyton, 20, in owning Wynot Oil.

Jalen, who has an agricultural science degree from South Dakota State University, Brookings, S.D., noted he and his family members came up with the idea of buying the business early in the spring of 2022. They also have a farming operation.

“We are all involved in the farming operation and felt something like this would fit well with farming,” Jalen said. “We wanted to come back to the area we have always called home after college, so this idea eventually became a reality.”

Jalen explained Landon has always wanted to own his own business while he was getting his college degree.

“In order to run a business like this, it takes a lot of manpower, so things just kind of fell into place for us,” Jalen said. “A crazy idea became reality and things are going well so far.”

Landon mentioned he is finishing up his business degree at South Dakota State University and will eventually manage Wynot Oil and its finances, as well as help out in the convenience store and shop when available.

“Jalen – he invested in the business and will help out when needed, but his role will be to take over and manage the family farm on a daily basis,” Landon said.

Landon noted Peyton is attending Northeast Community College, Norfolk, for auto mechanics and will work in the Wynot Oil shop when he finishes his education.

“Steve will help run the business, but eventually will settle into running the tank wagon full time, which is our fuel delivery service,” Landon said. “Peyton will also be involved in the fuel delivery service.”

Wynot Oil offers several services, such as a convenience store, fuel pumps, propane exchanges, all sizes of tires for sale, automotive and tire repair, fuel delivery, bulk oil sales, transport oil and fuel services, general auto supplies and many others.

“We want to focus on prompt service, whether it is scheduled or walk-in business,” Peyton said.

Tammy will be in charge of helping keep the business organized and assist with any surprises that come up.

“The community has been very supportive of the new business,” Tammy said. “Dennis has always provided so many services to Wynot and the surrounding communities.

“Keeping the business open has been a pretty big deal for the town of Wynot,” she said. “So with that being said, we have had a lot of positive feedback from community members.”

In addition to now owning Wynot Oil with three of their sons, Steve and Tammy have been farming and working in the Wynot Public Schools system for the last 23 years.

They also have a Pioneer seed corn business. Wynot Oil has three employees – Tami Bargstadt, Kip Dowling and Brandon Walters – who have been involved in the day-to-day operations of the business, including under the previous ownership. “They have been great during this transition,” Steve said. “Their work ethic and patience have been amazing.” Steve noted Dennis has been an amazing mentor during the transition and continues to help the Wieseler family daily. “If it wasn’t for his help and support as well as his guidance, there really is no way this could have happened,” Steve said. “I know this business is very important to him and it has been his passion his whole life. “I know it means a lot to him for the business to stay open and it means a lot to the Wieseler family that he has helped us with this transition,” he said. “It is very comforting to know he will always be willing to lend a hand when needed or just to educate us.” For more information on Wynot Oil, call 402-357-2463, e-mail wynot.oil@gmail.com or visit the business at 101 W.
