Wiedenfeld files to replace Rosener on HNS School Board

HARTINGTON – A newcomer has officially declared his intent to run for Hartington-Newcastle’s school board.

Brett Wiedenfeld’s name will appear on the ballot for school board. As of Monday morning, he’s the only candidate seeking one seat vacated by board member Dana Rosener who is not seeking another term.

So far he’s the only candidate who has declared an interest in filling the seat Rosener has held since the Hartington and Newcastle schools merged into one district.

“HNS is a really good school and I just want to keep that standard of excellence up,” Wiedenfeld said on his reason for running.

He said, if elected, he would have some big shoes to fill as Rosener has been a valuable asset on the board for many years.

Wiedenfeld is the chief financial officer at the Bank of Hartington, and said his financial experience and community knowledge are his biggest strengths.

He has not held public office before but has served on the Hartington Economic Development Board. Wiedenfeld has two children who attend Hartington-Newscastle Public Schools, a fifthgrader and sixth-grader.

Aaron Fuelberth and Jason Heikes both have expiring terms and both filed for re-election to the school board.

On the city government side, Roman Sudbeck and Chris Bartling both filed to retain their council seats.

In Wynot, all three school board members with expiring terms - Greg Hite, Kelly Wieseler and Kris Tilley - have filed to retain their seats.

New candidates have until Friday, March 1, to file with the Cedar County Clerk’s office for any race appearing on the May primary ballot.

Village board races like in Fordyce, St. Helena, Coleridge and Wynot will appear on the general election ballot only, so those filing deadlines are later this summer.

Already, two new candidates have filed for Coleridge Village Board: Dennis Heitman and Jesse Jackson.
