Welsh plans to capture life here

Posted in:

HARTINGTON — A new intern has joined the ranks of the Cedar County News and Northeast Neb. News Company for the summer.

Jenny Welsh, 20, began her duties as a photojournalist in Hartington last week.

She is a junior journalism and advertising major at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

She will take on a myriad of duties for the five Northeast Nebraska News Company newspapers this summer.

Welsh is the 13th straight UNL photo-journalist to intern here.

The News began working with the UNL College of Journalism Professor Bruce Thorson in 2008 to bring in interns each summer.

Past Cedar County News interns have gone onto some very distinguished journalism careers. Calla Kessler currntly works for the New York Times. Anna Reed works for the Omaha World Herald. Patrick Breen works for the Arizona Republic. Last year’s intern, Kenneth Fierra, is now working for the Lincoln Journal Star.

She grew up in Springfield, a town of 1,612 just outside of Omaha. Her first jobs were selling her farm fresh eggs and working as a barista at her local coffee shop.

Over the past year, she has found her interest in photography after taking photojournalism courses and becoming involved with the student-run newspaper, The Daily Nebraskan.

As a student photographer, she had the opportunity to photograph Nebraska football games, concerts and other events. She also got to travel to Wisconsin to photograph Nebraska volleyball.

She enjoys getting to meet new people and being able to document what is going on in her community.

“Growing up in a small town, I’ve come to know how valuable community is,” she said. “I love how small communities come together, even when times are tough.”

During the flooding in the spring of 2019, she traveled to Vedigre and Niobrara with her professor and a few classmates.

They went throughout the area looking for stories to tell, and the majority of what they found was people helping people. Farmers from all around the midwest traveled to northern Nebraska to provide relief. It was during this time that she learned how important it is to document both the good and the bad.

Jenny will be working at Cedar County News for the rest of the summer and hopes that she will be able to get to know people in the area and share what life is like for them.

“I am excited that I have the opportunity to do what I love every day while also getting to be part of a new community,” she said. “I can’t wait to see what life in Cedar County is like.”
