This week: Wynot expects big challenge from a tough Winnebago team

Posted in:

CEDAR CATHOLIC

Games this Week: Friday at Pierce, Saturday vs. Lutheran High Northeast

Outlook: The Lady Trojans were 4-5 overall at the start of the week and the hope is to be above .500 as the season gets into the heart of district play. Makenna Noecker hit four threes on the way to a 22-point outing in the LCC win, while Brynn and Aiden Wortmann added 12 and 10 points.

Last week’s results: Beat LCC, 54-44

Coach Craig Wortmann Comments: “In the first half against LCC, we played very well, with only two turnovers. We also played very good team defense. In the second half, we turned the ball over 10 times, which kept the game close.”

HARTINGTON-NEWCASTLE

Games this Week: Friday at Homer

Outlook: Homer has a veteran squad that could make things difficult for the Lady Wildcats and are playing well right now, according to the coaching staff. The expectation that fight and focus could be the difference in a very competitive contest.

Last week’s results: Beat Winside, 50-34; Lost to Wynot, 41-35

Coach Josh Morten Comments: “The game against Wynot was a great game with great atmosphere. The girls played a pretty solid game except for our turnovers. We just can’t have as many turnovers as we did and expect to win a game to an elite team like Wynot. Our ladies played with a lot of heart and our effort was great. We had some ladies step up and hit some shots in the second half that were big. We were down by 13 after quarter three and were able to get it to five late in the game, but we just couldn’t  completely close the gap.

“Our team has a couple games we seemed to take a couple steps back, but we did get better Friday against Wynot. Our inexperience is starting to get better and some girls are developing some confidence when they are on the floor.”

WYNOT

Games this Week: Friday vs. Winnebago

Outlook: It was a tough shooting night for the Lady Wildcats to hold on and win the Classic Tournament, but the Wynot girls eked it out. Offensively, it didn’t look like the previous semifinal game when the Lady Blue Devils drilled 13 3-pointers and had 12 different girls score.

Last week’s results: Beat Bloomfield 71-51, Beat Hartington-Newcastle 41-35.

Coach Steve Wieseler Comments: “Winnebago is one of the top teams in our conference, so this should be a good game.  We are staying focused on getting better every day.  We have a lot of tough games coming up and hopefully we will be ready for them.”
