March weather left a lasting impact here

HARTINGTON — Weather was the biggest news of the year here in 2019.

The March 13 floods caused millions of dollars in damage to Cedar County and to the entire state of Nebraska.

Besides the flooding, the year was marked with several stretches of wet weather and a long stretch of hot weather.

From May 17 to May 29 there was measurable precipitation here every day except two. During that stretch 6.78 inches of rain was recorded here.

An inch or more of rain fell here on 10 different days during the year.

More than two inches of rain fell in one 24-hour period on three occasions here in 2019. The wettest day of the year was the 2.78 inch rain storm March 13. The second wettest day of the year was Oct. 1, when 2.45 inches of rain fell here. On Aug. 3, 2.07 inches of rain fell here.

July, as usual, was hot and steamy, but the thermometer only hit triple digits on one occassion — July 19.

The mercury soared to 101 that day.

From June 24 to July 20, the daily high was at least 80 degrees on all but two days. The thermometer reached 85 degrees or more 20 times in this span.

The biggest temperature swing of the year took place Feb. 1, when the day had a 45-degree swing, starting out at 10 degrees, before the air heated up to 55 late in the afternoon.

Old Man Winter reared its ugly head quite a few times in 2019.

The thermometer dipped below zero on 13 different days in 2019.

Everything iced up here in late February and early March.

The thermometer dipped below zero from Feb. 24-26. Icy temperatures returned March 2-4, producing the coldest day of the year — -11 — on March 3.
