Wakefield’s second-half surge does in Lady Cats

HARTINGTON — The Hartington-Newcastle Lady Wildcats suffered a pair of setbacks last week.

The Lady Cats looked to be in good shape early Tuesday against Wakefield-Allen, staking a claim to an early 17-13 lead in the first quarter.

The visitors from the East rebounded in the second quarter to outscore the Lady Cats 16-8 and take a 29-25 lead into the halftime break.

Wakefield-Allen took control in the second half, outscoring the Purple Pride 22-9 in the third quarter. HNS put together a 10-9 fourth-quarter scoring run, but it was too little, too late.

Abbe Morten paced the HNS offense, dropping in 27 points.

Pierce got in front of the Lady Wildcats early and never looked back Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Jays stormed out of the gates on a 20-11 first-quarter run, then extended their lead to 30-20 at halftime. The Lady Jays again came out strong to start the second half, putting together a 19-4 run to seal the game.

The Lady Cats out-scored the Lady Jays 18-12 in the final frame, but by then the outcome had already been decided.
