Virgil D. Kathol

HARTINGTON — Virgil D. Kathol, 67, Hartington, died Nov., 26, 2020 at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton, S.D.

A public visitation and vigil service were Sunday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Hartington, and continued Monday morning at church, one hour prior to services.

A public Mass of Christian Burial was Nov. 30 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, with the Rev. Owen Korte officiating.

Burial was at the St. Michael’s Cemetery, Hartington. Face masks and social distancing were required for the visitation and funeral. Services were also live streamed at www.facebook.com/WintzRay.

Pallbearers were Bob Heimes, Bill Heimes, Kyle Suing, Blaise Kathol, James Rodney, Jeff Rodney, Nick Suing and John Huennekens.

Honorary pallbearers were his grandchildren, Margaret Kathol, Blaise Kathol, Lainey Kathol, Deacon Kathol, Jack Kathol, Annabelle Kathol, James Rodney, Scarlet Nelson and Ivy Nelson.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Wintz Funeral Home, Hartington.

Virgil Daniel Kathol was born Jan. 1, 1953, in Yankton, S.D., to Ivo Louis and Bernadette (Jansen) Kathol. He grew up north of Hartington and graduated from Cedar Catholic High School in 1971. Virgil married Mary Lou Suing May 23, 1975, in Constance. In 1974, Virgil went into the trucking business with his father and then a short time later he began his own trucking business – creating Virgil Kathol Trucking, Inc. Virgil has been operating this business for 40- plus years. He also farmed and raised cattle.

Virgil belonged to Holy Trinity Catholic Church and enjoyed his 4-wheeler on his farm in Obert. He loved playing cards and was known to have a great sense of humor. Virgil especially loved playing with his nine grandkids.

Virgil is survived by his wife, Mary Lou, Hartington; three children, Gregg (Beth) Kathol, Bismarck, N.D.; Kathy (Jeff) Rodney, Lincoln; Peggy Nelson, Sioux Falls, S.D.; nine grandchildren; seven siblings, Mary Lou Wolhoy, Yorktown, Iowa; Bernice (Ron) Tramp, Crofton; Yvonne (John) Huennekens, Yankton, S.D.; Janice (Gary) Holzbauer, Wagner, S.D.; Marjorie Climer, Hartington; Rita (Rich) Pedersen, Hartington; Lilia Hansen (Gregg Jansen), Omaha; brother-in-law LaVerle Heimes, Hartington.

He was preceded in death by his parents; infant daughter, Traci Kathol; sister, Karen Heimes; brother, Roger Kathol; and brothers-in-law, Jack Wolhoy and Jim Climer.
