Veronica J. “Ronnie” Calhoon

LAUREL — Veronica J. “Ronnie” Calhoon, 87, Laurel, died Oct. 4, 2018, at the Careage Campus of Care, Wayne. Visitation will be Wednesday, at church, from 5-7 p.m., with a Vigil Service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue Thursday, at church, one hour prior to services. Mass of Christian Burial will be Oct. 11, at 10:30 a.m., at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Laurel, with the Rev. David Liewer officiating. Burial will be at St. Michael’s Cemetery, Coleridge. Pallbearers will be Byron Kalin, Blair Kalin, Gary Flanders, Greg Lackas, Monte Lowe and Doran Burmood. Honorary pallbearers will be Veronica’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wintz Funeral Home, Laurel. Veronica Joan “Ronnie” was born Dec.18, 1930, in Coleridge, to Edward and Abby (Hansen) Kalin. She grew up in Coleridge and graduated from Coleridge High School. She then went to the St. Joseph Mercy School of Nursing, Sioux City, Iowa. After graduating in 1951, Veronica taught nurses training at the school prior to marrying Harry Glen Calhoon Nov. 11, 1953, in Coleridge. She worked for Dr. R.P. Carroll in Laurel for many years, then at the Laurel Medical Clinic for Dr. Nguyen Tien. Veronica finished her career as a nurse at Park View Haven Nursing Home, Coleridge. After retirement, Veronica taught CNA classes part-time at Northeast Technical College, Norfolk. Veronica enjoyed spending time with all her family. She loved to play cards and attend her grandchildren’s activities. Veronica is survived by her two sons, Mike and wife, Patty Calhoon, Grand Island, and Marti Calhoon, Wayne; five grandchildren, Lindsay (Tyson) Davison, Lawrence, Kan.; Amanda Calhoon, Bastrop, Texas; Katherine Calhoon, Omaha; Jessica (Tony) Garza, Omaha; and Joshua (Kriss) Calhoon, Norfolk; six great-grandchildren; and brother-in-law, Kearney Lackas, Belden. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harry, Aug. 6, 2009, at the age of 83; daughter-in-law, Louise Calhoon; two sisters, Loretta “Tootie” Keating and Carol Lackas; and brother, Clarence “Swede” Kalin.
