Vernon Aloysius Gubbels

RANDOLPH - Vernon Aloysius Gubbels, 84, Randolph, died March 7, 2021, at his home in Randolph.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., March 10 at Saint Jane Frances de Chantal Catholic Church, Randolph, with Rev. Father Timothy Forget and Deacon Doug Tunink officiating. Services will also be live streamed at www.johnsonfuneralhomes. net or Johnson Funeral Homes Facebook page.

Visitation and a Vigil Service were Tuesday at church under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home, Randolph.

Interment will be in St. Frances Catholic Cemetery, Randolph, with Military Rites by V.F.W. Alvin Kessler Post #5545 and American Legion Post #113 of Randolph; Members of United States Army Honor Guard; and Legion Riders.

Pallbearers will be Vernon’s grandsons, Luke Virgil, Craig Lenhoff, Andrew Olson, Owen Gubbels, Derek Gubbels, Mason Nordhues, Devin Herda, Jake Virgil, Aaron Olson, Rylan Gubbels and Michael Herda.

Vernon’s spirit lives on through his wife, his eight children, 21 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren, two sisters, two brothers-in-law and extended family of relation and friends. He was a loving husband, grandfather, brother, cousin, uncle and friend.

Vernon was born Dec. 12, 1936, in Randolph, to Aloysius and Clara (Thieman) Gubbels. He attended St. Frances Parochial school and was a 1954 graduate of St. Frances Catholic High School, Randolph. Vernon was inducted into the United States Army March 9, 1955, where he served for two years in Texas and Louisiana, receiving an honorable discharge March 8, 1957.

Vernon married Sharon von Rentzell June 16, 1958, at St. Frances Catholic Church, Randolph. The couple lived in Council Bluffs, Iowa, until October then they moved back to begin farming. Vernon continued farming until he retired in 2001. In 2002, he started driving truck for Allen Burbach at Tri County Feed & Grain in Randolph until 2007, when he started trucking for Brad Bargstadt on and off until 2012. In 2010, he also began work for Randolph Farm Supply employed there until 2014.

Vernon was a member of St. Jane Frances de Chantal Catholic Church, Randolph, where he also served on the church board and as a member of the Knights of Columbus chapter #5143; he also served on the board of directors of Randolph Senior Center and delivered Meals on Wheels. He was a member of American Legion Post #113 of Randolph and served on the military honor guard for many years.

He enjoyed going for drives to check on Nordhues Farms and von Rentzell farms, as well as past neighbors and friends in the farming communities of Randolph and Osmond. His favorite pastimes include fishing, golfing. Vernon especially enjoyed visits from his eight children, his grand kids, as well as his extended family and friends.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Sharon Gubbels, Randolph; eight children, Teresa (Rick) Virgil, Weston; Tami (Larry) Wilhelm, Lincoln; Lori Olson, Randolph; Dan Gubbels, Lincoln; Tim (Marci) Gubbels, Waverly; Brad (Michelle) Gubbels, Highlands Ranch, Colo.; Becky (Doug) Nordhues, McLean; Lisa (Mike) Herda, Cheyenne, Wyo.; two sisters, Marian (Jerry) Wingert, Osmond, and Norma (Phil) Leu, Elkhorn; four sisters-in-law, Nancy von Rentzell, Osmond; Diane von Rentzell, Oklahoma City, Okla.; Sheryl von Rentzell, Osmond; Sharise (Sid) Engel, Omaha; 21 grandchildren, Amanda (Wes) Geneski, Antonia Olson, Angelina (Jeremy) Burns, Craig (Andrea) Lenhoff, Lucas (Megan) Virgil, Andrew (Nicole) Olson, Lindsey Lenhoff, Jennifer Brothers; Aaron Olson, Morgan (Allen) Wichman, Michelle (Justin Benedict) Virgil, Jacob Virgil, Paige (Trent) Greene, Jordan (Daniel) Click, Devin Herda, Owen Gubbels, Rylan Gubbels, Mason (Maesik Denn) Nordhues, Derek Gubbels, Michael Herda and Danielle Gubbels; 23 great-grandchildren, Zoe Geneski, Lyric Brown Click, Kane Lenhoff, Jaxson Burns, Elyse Lenhoff, Gage Geneski, Aizlynn Wichman, Axtyn Olson, Ali Burns, Ayla Lenhoff, Brody Virgil, Allory Olson, Ainsley Olson, Tinley Wichman, Pake Lenhoff, Brynn Virgil, William Greene, Eviana Brothers, Oliver Wichman, Braxton Brothers, Jonathan Greene, Andersyn Olson and Aubriella Benedict; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and family too numerous to list but not forgotten.

Vernon was preceded in death by his parents, Aloysius and Clara Gubbels; a brother-in-law, Gary von Rentzell; son-in-law, Vernon Olson; and great-grandson, Zayden Wichman.
