Verlene V. Ryan

NORFOLK — Funeral service for Verlene V. Ryan, 88, Norfolk, was held Saturday, April 27, 2019, at the Stonacek Funeral Chapel in Norfolk with Rev. John E. Nelson Jr. officiating. Interment was at the Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery, Norfolk. Visitation was held Friday at Stonacek Funeral Chapel. Verlene died Monday, April 22, 2019, at the Heritage of Bel Air Nursing Home, Norfolk.

Stonacek Funeral Chapel in Norfolk was in charge of the arrangements.

The daughter of Harry E.A. and Ida A. (Fuhrman) Brummels was born Feb. 22, 1931, in Sholes. She was baptized April 12, 1931, and confirmed July 15, 1945, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Randolph. Verlene grew up in the Randolph area and graduated from Randolph High School in 1948.

She married Virgil Ryan Aug. 10, 1950, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Randolph. After marriage, the couple lived by Newman Grove for two years, then moved south of Battle Creek for 10 years. They later moved east of Pierce and then to Winside in 1969.

Virgil died June 4, 1972. She moved to Hoskins in 1972 and lived there for five years.

Verlene then moved to Norfolk in 1977. She worked as a cook at St. Joseph’s Nursing Home in Norfolk for six years. She also worked at the Lutheran Hospital for 18 years.

Verlene enjoyed cooking, sewing, crocheting, gardening, making quilts for her family and taking care of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a member of Mount Olive Lutheran Church in Norfolk, its ladies aid and an extension club.

Survivors include her children, Eva (Doug) Hansen, Omaha; Randy (Luana) Ryan, Niobrara; Ron (Kristi) Ryan, Kansas City, Mo.; and Jana Ahlman, Meadow Grove; 14 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; a brother, Robert “Pete” (Darlene) Brummels, Elkhorn; and her sisters-in-law, Frances Brummels, Ewing; JoAnn Brummels, Prescott Valley, Ariz.; Delma Ronspies, Norfolk; Vera Horn, Newman Grove; and Irene Bilau, McLean.

She was preceded in death by her spouse, Virgil; her parents, Harry and Ida; a grandson, Andrew; six brothers, Vernon, Kenneth, Merlin, Willard, Gilbert and LeRoy; six sisters, Mildred Warneke, Pearl Warneke, Hilda Warneke, Edith Owens, Jeanette Wheeler and Ellen Cunningham; and a son-in-law, Sam Ahlman.

Casket bearers were Verlene’s grandsons and great-grandsons: Christopher Ryan, Brandon Meinke, Adam Ahlman, Joshua Reil, Ryan Reil, Dylan Ahlman, Tyler Rines and Ethan Fernau.
