Trojans win their own invitational

HARTINGTON - The Cedar Catholic Trojan and Lady Trojan track teams enjoyed a very successful day April 9 while hosting their own invitational.

Alex Kuehn led the Trojans to the team title and Lauren Bernecker did the same for the Lady Trojans.

“Alex Kuehn and Lauren Bernecker have been very strong in the sprints,” Cedar Catholic coach Blair Kalin said. “Our throwers and hurdlers are also really improving.”

The Trojans put up 124 points, Hartington-Newcastle was second with 104 and the Lady Trojans came in with 119 points, Wausa won the title with 127.

Kuehn was a part of 40 points for the Cedar Catholic boy.

He won the 400 in 51.45 seconds and the long jump with a best of 19-feet-9-inches.

He also ran legs in the 400 and 1,600-meter relays.

Breiton Whitmire, Booker Hochstein and Mason Baller joined Kuehn in the 400 relay while Whitmire, Matthew Loecker and Nolan Becker teamed up with Kuehn to win the 1,600-meter relay.

The 3,200 quartet of Loecker, Kighter Wortmann, Becker and Alex Elks made it a clean sweep for the Trojans in the relays by winning that event.

The hurdlers had a good day as Kalin alluded to; Nolan Heimes, Easton Hochstein, Brodie Kleinschmit and Wes Pinkelman placed third, fourth, sixth and seventh respectively in the 110-meter high hurdles and Heimes and Hochstein were third and sixth in the 300 hurdles respectively.

Adam and Alex Elks scored 14 points in the 1,600 with Adam placing second and Alex taking third, Adam also placed second in the 3,200-meter run.

Jared Rutar was second in the shot with a heave of 41-10, teammate, Sam Wiebelhaus was fifth with a 36-11 effort. Rutar placed third in the discus.

Becker placed third in the 800 with Loecker right on his heels in fifth, Hunter Kuchta and Kighter Wortmann were behind Kuehn in the 400 taking fourth and fifth.

Booker Hochstein was fifth in the 100 and Mason Baller was sixth in the 200.

Bernecker swept the sprints for 30 points, winning the 100, 200 and 400 in 13.35, 27.28 and 1:00.76 respectively and joined her sister, Brynn, Claire Rolfes and Kally Becker to take gold in the 1,600 relay.

Brynn Bernecker also placed second in the 200 in 27.99 seconds.

Lexi Eickhoff had another fine day in the rings winning the shot with a toss of 38-08.50 and taking the discus with a throw of 106-08. Addison Walter was second in the shot and fifth in the discus.

Kally Becker added 10 points with a win in the 800, Isabel Rolfes placed fourth in the event and Ava Noecker was sixth.

Claire Rolfes placed second in the 1,600 and Savannah Pick used a best of 15-00.5 to place second in the long jump.

Both teams were scheduled to be in South Dakota April 16 at the Bon Homme Invitational in Tyndall and will travel to the Pierce Invite on April 18.
