Trio of Cedar wrestlers earn gold at Plainview meet

PLAINVIEW — Cedar Catholic earned a fourth-place finish at the Plainview Invite on Saturday during a record-setting day.

Three wrestlers finished first in their weight class and seven Trocat wrestlers earned team points to set a school record for most team points at an Invite with 124.5 points.

An individual record was also set by Cedar’s Eric Hoesing. He pinned an opponent in seven seconds to take his brother Patrick’s record for quick- est pin. Patrick Hoesing’s record was an eight-second pin.

Hoesing won first place at 182 pounds, he was joined by teammates Turner Korth and Ethan Koch also earning first place at 145 and 152 pounds, respectively.

Korth led Cedar Catholic with 28 team points. After starting his day with a bye, Korth pinned his next two opponents to advance to the championship match. Korth then won in a 6-1 decision over Plainview’s Will Gunning. Plainview’s Gunning had recently been listed by the Nebraska Scholastic Wrestling Coaches Association (NSWCA) as the fifth best wrestler in Class D at 145 pounds. Korth had been listed as a contender in Class C by NSWCA. Korth went 3-0 on the day and is 31-7 on the year.

Koch grabbed the second most team points with 27.5. He also started with a bye. Koch then pinned Wayne’s Cooper Zara in 2:50 to advance to the semifinals. Koch then won in commanding fashion in the semifinals, defeating Norfolk Catholic’s Francisco Mendez by tech fall to advance to the finals. Mendez had recently been listed by the NWSCA as a contender in Class C at 145 pounds. Koch finished his day by winning the championship match in a 7-3 decision over Randolph’s Brandon Bloomquist. Koch went 3-0 on the day and is 12-2 on the season.

Hoesing earned the third most points for Cedar with 25 team points and a first-place finish at 182 pounds. Hoesing started in dramatic fashion by pinning Wayne’s Angel Sanchez in a school record seven seconds. In the semifinals, Hoesing pinned Creigh- ton’s Terance Burrell in 1:35. Hoesing then won the first place match over Plainview’s Lucas Hammer by a 9-1 major decision.

The three first-place finishers combined for 80.5 team points. The remaining 44 points came from a combined effort of Kerby Hochstein, Morgan Koch, Nash Albers, and Carson Jones.
Hochstein earned 13 points with a fifth-place finish at 126 pounds. He went 2-2 on the day and is 26-13 on the season. Koch also earned 13 points with a fifth-place finish at 160 pounds. The junior went 2-2 on the day and is 23-9 on the year.

Albers earned 11 points with a fourth-place finish at 120 pounds. He went 2-3 on the day.

Jones earned seven points with a fifth-place finish at 106 pounds. He went 1-4 on the day.

Conner Hochstein at 138 pounds and Cole Steffensen at 145 pounds both wrestlers went 0-2 on the day. Hochstein is 6-19 on the year and Steffensen is 6-12.

Cedar Catholic is next in action at the Mid State Conference Tournament Thursday in Wayne. The Trocats travel to the Norfolk Catholic Invite Saturday.
