Throwback Thursday: Women have the right to vote or do they?

Posted in:

April 4, 1919

HARTINGTON — Local election officials threw in the reverse very suddenly Tuesday morning after refusing to admit members of the fair sex to enjoy their recently granted privilege of voting the municipal as well as the school ticket.

Two well known women were given only the school ticket and quickly made protest, demanding the city ballots also only to be met by a stern refusal. They voted school ticket, asked that it be noted that they had not voted at the city election and immediately sought the assistance of City Clerk  Phole, who officially advised the election officers that women could now vote the complete ticket.

The two doughty ones then went back and voted the city ticket, so there!

The only ticket nominated by petition naturally carried those elected were B. Read, Mayor; W.H. Phole, clerk; R.G. Mason, treasurer; H.G. Felber, engineer; G.E. Anderson and Hans Sorenson, members of the Council and Geroge Best and Hans Sorenson, members of the school board.
