HARTINGTON — Two Hartington soldiers, First Lt. Joseph F. Peitz and tech Sgt. Harvey W. Lentz, both with the 134th Infantry, were recently awarded Bronze Star medals by Major General Paul W. Baade for heroic services.

The presentations were made in Europe.

Lt. Peitz is the son of Mrs. Christina Peitz, and Sgt. Lentz is the son of Mrs. Clara Lentz.

Lt. Peitz received his medal for heroic service near Habkirchen, Germany on Dec. 15, 1944. The citation read:

“Under enemy observation and fire, Lt. Peitz, a platoon leader, made three trips into the outskirts of the enemy-held village of Habkirchen, with a mission of locating positions for his 57 mm guns. He accomplished his mission, returned to his position and, under cover of darkness, moved it to position without casualties. His cool, courageous actions are in accord with military tradition.”

Sgt. Lentz received his medal for heroic service in the vicinity of Hilfarth, Germany, Feb. 9-10, 1945.

The citation read: “Sgt. Lentz, a platoon Sergeant, made a reconnaissance about 800 yards ahead of our lines, then led squads from his platoon into the area with the mission of clearing the road of mines to a point near the enemy-held village of Hilfarth. Displaying a high order of personal bravery, sound judgement and leadership ability, Sgt. Lentz accomplished his mission on schedule, thereby facilitating the subsequent advance of his unit in that area.”
