HARTINGTON - Many area residents were still dealing Friday with the effects of last week’s blizzard. Road and electric power crew workers and residents in Cedar County continued to struggle with weather related problems.

The ice, wind and snow also knocked electricity out for about two-thirds of Cedar-Knox Public Power’s customers. Some customers in the Bloomfield area did not get electricity restored until 8 p.m. Friday, said Dan Leise, Cedar-Knox acting manager.

HARTINGTON - Through a multi-agency agreement with Federal, state and local agencies, a new office has opened in Hartington.

The Missouri River Futures was formed in February 2005 due to visions and concerns for the Missouri River and its shoreline.

Steve Grube, Hartington, is the coordinator at the Missouri River Futures Office which opened its doors Oct. 1 at the north end of Broadway Street.

FORDYCE - Even though Bill and Sharon Hirschman’s farm was hit hard by the winter storm, they have a lot to be thankful for.

A fire destroyed their sons’ home Tuesday, but no one was hurt. With the loss of electricity and high snow drifts on Monday, Nov. 28, Bill Hirschman and his two sons were scurrying to secure the livestock at their farm place near Fordyce.

HARTINGTON - The pressure could not have gotten any more intense last week for Jason Folkers’ debut as the new Cedar Catholic girls basketball coach.

Folkers took the helm this season from Terry Kathol, the school’s all-time wirmingest basketball coach.

The opening-season home stand featured two state rated teams on the Msgr. Werner Activ-ity Center floor to take on the 2009 Class C2 State runner-up Lady Trojans.

Thursday’s season-opener here lived up to its billing as a heavyweight title bout.

The top two rated Class C2 teams in the state battled toe-totoe in Thursday’s season-opener.

Second-ranked Cedar Catholic ended up dropping the non-conference contest 47-41 to top-rated Crofton in a nail biter to spoil Folkers’ coaching debut at Cedar.

The Lady Warriors completely shut down Cedar’s inside game and last year’s team MVP Dana Dickes to control the game.
