Thomas J. Gubbels

RANDOLPH — Thomas J. Gubbels, age 81 of Randolph, Nebraska died on Saturday, November 17, 2018 at the Norfolk Veterans Home in Norfolk, Nebraska. Tom will be reunited with his wife in heaven after 48 years of being apart.

Visitation and a Vigil service were Tuesday, at church in Randolph, and will continue Wednesday, one hour prior to services.

Mass of Christian Burial will be on Wednesday, November 21, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Jane Frances de Chantal Catholic Church in Randolph, Nebraska with the Rev. Marc Lim officiating.

Burial will be at St. Frances cemetery in Randolph with military honors by the Alvin Kessler VFW Post 5545.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Wintz Funeral Home, Hartington.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Chance Buss, Jacob Gubbels, Lucus Gubbels, Benjamin Gubbels, Peter Gubbels, Michael Haselhorst and Adam Haselhorst.

Honorary pallbearers will be Tom’s grandchildren and greatgrandchildren.

Thomas Jacob Gubbels was born March 24, 1937, in Randolph, to Matthias Hubert and Sophia C. (Scharf) Gubbels. He grew up in Randolph and graduated from St. Frances High School in 1955. He returned to farm with his father until he served in the U.S. Army in 1958. Tom married Patricia Louise Kurtzhals Dec. 27, 1960, in Coleridge. Tom farmed in the Coleridge area and moved to the Randolph area in 1970. He raised grain and livestock, milked cows and also drove a truck. After retiring, he continued to be active with animals and pets. Tom also enjoyed making rosaries. He made over 1,000 of them during his lifetime.

Tom was a member of St. Jane Frances de Chantal Catholic Church and was baptized and confirmed there. He was active in his church through the years, where he read and was an EMHC at Mass. Tom’s family was the center of his life and he really enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Thomas is survived by his three children and spouses, Mark and Joann Gubbels, Osmond; Madonna and John Buss, Pierce; Anna Marie and Dave Haselhorst, Randolph; 14 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Melvin Gubbels, Lena, Wis., and Brother Mark Gubbels FSC, Memphis, Tenn.; sister-in-law, Dorothy Gubbels, Columbus; many nieces and nephews; and special friend, Dorothy, Norfolk.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Patricia, Nov. 10, 1970, at the age of 30; two brothers, Michael Gubbels and Isadore (Angela) Gubbels; two sisters, Lexi Otterpohl and Sr. Magdalina Gubbels OSB; nephew, Rusty Gubbels; and sister-in-law, Althea Gubbels.
