Thomas “Tom” Uhing

MANILA, Philippine Islands — Thomas “Tom” Uhing, 83, Manila, Philippine Islands, died peacefully at his home Oct. 12, 2020. Tom was born on the family farm five miles north of Hartington Aug. 29, 1937, to Alphonse and Theresa (Franz) Uhing. He attended Catholic grade school at Sts. Peter and Paul, Bow Valley, and Holy Trinity High School for his freshman year and then he joined the missionary Society of the Divine World (SVD) in Techny, Ill., and finished his schooling there. He professed his final vows as a brother in that society and was sent to the Philippines to begin his missionary work. He belonged to his brotherhood for 17 years and worked among the people in Manila at the Catholic Trade School run by the SVD missionaries. Tom left the order in 1970 and married Alina Quitos Dec. 30, 1971. He worked for various companies as a consultant until he retired.

He was an avid photographer and sent many photos and slide shows home to his family in Nebraska. He is survived by two sons, Brian, Manila, and Michael, Ashburn, Va.; one grandson, River, Manila; and two sisters, Fran Gullikson, Fordyce, and Lory Garrison, Libby, Mont.

He was preceded in death by his parents; loving wife, Alina; one daughter, Natalie; one son, Marc Dennis; his sister, Patricia Teran; and two brothers-in-law, George Teran and Terry Garrison.
